Local restaurants in Ljubljana

Looking for restaurants owned by locals where locals dine. Nothing fancy. Just good food in pleasant surroundings. Suggestions appreciated.

Well, I can recommend to dine at our favorite Ljubljana restaurant. “Good food & pleasant surroundings.” We ate at Juliya several nights outdoors. We made reservations. Take a look and see if this meets your expectations. Hope you enjoy Ljubljana. It’s our favorite city.

If you are in Ljubljana on a Friday, be sure to check out Open Kitchen in Pogacar Square. Many food and drink vendors from local restaurants. Great atmosphere! Crowded with tourists and locals.

Love that idea but unfortunately I arrive on Saturday. Too bad. That is my kind of thing. Thank you so much for replying.

JB restaurant, located in the center is one of the best restaurants in the world according to several magazines but is really expensive too. I don't really know other places because I'm not really from Ljubljana.

As for our traditional food you should defenitly try "potica" (semi sweet; made of wallnuts and dough), "prekmurska gibanica" (a sweet; made of dough, wallnuts, cottage cheese, apple, poppy seeds), "štruklji" (dough with cottage cheese or dough with walnuts), "Bled cream cake" (the best can be eaten in Restaurant at Bled castle).

For special places check Velika Planina which is a plateau and is located about 30km from Ljubljana. It's really beautiful up there.

If you would consider a food tour, LjubljanaYUM has a great one. You also get a PDF Ljubljana foodie guide with favorite restaurants of the company's owners.

  • Okrrepčevalnica - Ristoro Obzidje - next to the wall, small, ordinary food
  • Cantina Klet - good foods, a bit touristy
  • Verdi - cash only, very good food
  • Fritolin pri Cantini - ate here twice, cash only, excellent seafood, only patio seating
  • Caffe Angelica - a dive bar, locals only
  • Pizzeria Petica - very good pizza

Portorož

  • Pizzeria Porto Knob - excellent lunch on the patio

Ljubljana

  • Güjžina - good food, but too touristy, not recommended
  • Fétiche - pizza, enjoyed it
  • Sveti Flori Jan - a foodie dinner, expensive and worth it
  • Mediterrano - pizza, good
  • Monstera - OMG!, fabulous lunch, inspired items
  • Costilna Pri Kolovratu - a very good dinner. some tourists
  • Pop’s Place - burger & fries, next to river, we had a relaxing lunch

Blejsko jezero

  • Restavracija & Pizzeria Camping Bled - of course it is 100% tourists, but the food and service were quite good

So, Marion… where'd you eat? What are your recommendations for others who might stumble upon this thread?

Unfortunately I will be no help with food. Before taking this trip I had no idea that the small tour group I would be traveling with my was including so many four course meals as part of the tour. After a huge Buffet breakfast and then either a big meal included for lunch or dinner I was not interested in another big meal. On some occasions it was ice cream for lunch and one evening a high school band was performing in the square across the bridge so I enjoyed the concert and had soup for dinner. I am hoping that other tourists will benefit from all the great suggestions I could not take advantage of. Although I am no help with food I will check the forum starting next week to give suggestions and advice on activities as well as other issues.
