Hi everyone
Google maps suggests it will take about 50 min to drive from Ljubljana to Skocjan Caves. We are wanting to get there to do the 10am tour (late Sept). Is this driving time estimate accurate and how early would we need to get there to get on the 10am tour? Is there just the one tour option of these caves? I’d like to prebook but don’t think I can.
Cheers
Cathy
Last June Via Michelin estimated the time to get to Postojna caves was about 45 min I believe. However, we hit construction and it took about 1 1/2 hours. On the way back it was less than an hour though. Always leave extra time.
To ensure you make it in time, leave an hour early as the A1 highway is usually busy and you may get delayed. If you manage to get there in 50 minutes (realistic with little traffic), you can walk to the nearby village of Skocjan, which features traditional Karst architecture or you can walk along the rim of the open-air part of the canyon.
I visited the cave in August 2015. There were certainly multiple English-language tours each day, but I don't remember seeing a schedule. It's entirely possible that there's an English tour offered at each departure time, which according to the website is hourly, on the hour, between 10 AM and 5 PM.
Thanks everyone :-) I’m also contemplating staying nearby the night before - checking out my options... any suggestions?
Ljubljana is such a lovely place that I'd hate to foresake it for a pig-in-a-poke town that might be dull at night and not have much in the way of food options. I hope someone has a useful suggestion.
That’s a very good point. I think we’ll just leave Ljubljana early that morning. If we miss the first tour it’s not a big deal as it’s inky an hour wait.
Cathy, if you'll have a smart phone with internet service in Slovenia (or a GPS with traffic info), you can always use it to bypass traffic jams. Otherwise, I'd just take the main highway and leave a little early. I doubt it will be very busy in late September.
Thanks Andrew- we’ll do that. We will definitely leave early and we should have Internet (assuming it’s working!)
