Ljubljana, Lake Bled and Predjama Castle

So my wife to be and I will be taking our honeymoon this winter. We will be starting out in Prague, then Vienna, then Salzburg and finally to Slovenia over a 14 day trip. We were thinking of covering Ljubljana, Lake Bled, and Predjama Castle over a 2.5 day span. Is this reasonable without being overly ambitious? Also, we were thinking of being based out of Ljubljana one day, and Lake Bled another day. Is this advisable and is there anything else we should be covering during winter in Slovenia?

We appreciate your help and advice. Thank you.

You'll need at least 3 nights. We drove from Salzburg to Ljubljana, leaving Salzburg around noon. With the windy Alpine roads, we didn't get to Ljubljana until 8 or 9 at night. We only had 2 more nights in Ljubljana after that and totally wish we had more. We did a day trip to Lake Bled, coming back into Ljbuljana at dinner time. And then another day trip to Predjama Castle and Postojna Caves. It was doable and it didn't feel like we were crunching things into our day trips, but we didn't get to enjoy Ljubljana as much as we would have liked. RS says in his book that he hasn't met anyone who hasn't gone to Slovenia and wished they spent more time there. That turned out to be true for us as well. How much time are you spending in Salzburg? We just did 2 nights and that was sufficient for us. We were also on our honeymoon. Happy honeymooning. :)

we stayed at a gorgous tourist farm up the hill from lake bled, took the boat ride across to the island (a MUST do) walked the entire distance around the lake, including up the HILL to the castle and had a fabulous lunch with wine in the restaurant at the castle). a VERY full day, but doable on foot for us, 4 fifty year old women in varying degrees of shape. oh, just saw the "winter" part of your post.... don't know what month you mean, but the boats eventually come out of the water, and the castle might do to reduced hours also, so do some research. are you renting a car? are you up to winter driving in the mountains?

Sorry for the late reply, was away for a few weeks on travel. Well, instead of driving, we were thinking public transportation, i.e. bus or rail. Are there trains that go from Salzburg to Lake Bled? I know there are buses from Lake Bled to Ljubljana. Thanks.

I wasn't aware of any train network in Slovenia. We never noticed any train or metro stops in Ljubljana. Though that's not to say there isn't. The drive from Salzburg to Slovenia is a beautiful drive. And driving in Slovenia and Austria is relatively easy. I'd recommend renting a car, though driving and navigating in Europe (or any city you're not familiar with for that matter) do add an extra layer of stress to your trip. That being said, we were glad we did the drive.

We were in Croatia and Slovenia 2 years ago. There is train service in Slovenia. We took the train from Lake Bled to Ljubljana, and then on to Zagreb where we rented a car. With just 2.5 nights in the area, you wouldn't really be able to do it justice.

Yes there is train service from Salzburg to Lesce Bled station (about 2.5 kilometers from Bled). Upon arriving at the Lesce Bled station you will need to either take a taxi to Bled (about 11 euros) or there may be bus service which operates between the train station and Bled, but I don't have information on that. You can find a schedule for the train service at the bahn.de website. The website comes up in German but you can switch to the English version with a click of the tab at the upper right side of the website.

IMO, I would spend time visiting Postojna Cave with just a quick detour up the road to take a peak at Predjama Castle without entering it. What makes the castle interesting is its location.
