We have a 7:40 am departure from Ljubljana -- what time would you recommend we get there for departures? Also, is returning your rental car at the airport a headache and do you recommend returning it a day early and taking a shuttle from the hotel? We are renting from Hertz.

Get there two hours early, that should be fine. Returning a car is absolutely not a headache, it's a really small airport.

If you drop the car before they open at 8:00, then you don't have the opportunity to have them sign off on your paperwork. (Although I once had trouble getting a live person to sign at a different airport.) If you're staying at a hotel with an airport shuttle, then I would drop off the car the night before.

I can't speak to the rental car, but in May I flew out of the Ljubljana airport. I also had an early departure (I think it was around 7:20-7:30am.) I got to the airport around 5 and the airline counter wasn't even open for check in yet. Had to wait around for it to open before I could check in and get my boarding pass. Security was a breeze, there wasn't even a line. Our group had more than an hour to wait around before boarding. I did notice that the airport got busier as the morning wore on, but I agree with the others that 2 hours before your flight should be plenty of time.
