Is there any reasonably convenient way to get directly to Maribor from the Ljubljana airport (without an expensive transfer service or having to go to Ljubljana first)? Like is there a good bus to Maribor or the Maribor airport?

Hi Jeff, unfortunately there is no direct public transport link between the Ljubljana airport and Maribor. However, as the route between the two places goes through Ljubljana anyway, the only time saving involved would have been the transfer time in Ljubljana. I would advise simply taking a shuttle or bus into Ljubljana and then change to a train or bus for Maribor at the central station. Alternatively, you can try using a low-cost shuttle service such as GoOpti.
Thanks. It's unfortunate there is no cheap option. I guess it's not a common route, although I'd have thought there'd be a bus at least between the airports. Having to go in the wrong direction (to Lubjlana to get to Maribor) after a long international flight is not appealing. The private transfer (times a few folks) is at least several days worth of a car rental, so it's not inexpensive.
It all depends on when are you travelling, how many people there are and what your budget is. Ljubljana is en route between the airport and Maribor, so changing buses in Ljubljana does not mean travelling in the wrong direction. You could also change to a train, the train and bus stations are next to each other. The cost of the entire trip by public transport would be around €15-20 per person, depending on the connection you chose. A shuttle service such as GoOpti, booked a few weeks in advance, would set you back about the same amount of money per person.
When I checked, it sounded very inconvenient, slow, and not cheap--more than 100 Euros for three. I will rent a car instead.
