SO I am hoping to rent a car, drive to Lake Bled. Stay a few nights and head back to Trieste for a cruise.
The cruise departs late in the day - 7PM
The drive is 1.5 hrs.
Should it be OK to do the drive in the morning with the border crossing and make it in time?

Where do you plan to rent the car? Slovenia and Italy are both in Schengen so the border crossing is easy.

We were going to rent the car in Trieste, Italy....drive to Lake Bled...then back. US passports. Going between Slovenia and Italy.

You could do it by train too. There are direct trains (and buses) from Trieste to Ljubljana. Day trips to Lake Bled by bus are very easy.
There is also a Slovenian transfer service called GoOpti that is reliable, taking you from points near Slovenia e.g. Trieste to various places in Slovenia.
But yes, driving is easy in Slovenia. Just be sure to buy a vignette driving pass for Slovenia so you can drive on Slovenian highways, otherwise you risk a big fine. You can buy one online now (e-vignette).
