Kranjska Gora for 6 nights or 4 there and 2 somewhere else?

I am planning our early September trip, planning on hiking our legs off in Slovenia after seeing castles and beautiful city stuff in Munich and Salzburg. There are so many things to see and do near Kranjska Gora that I cannot decide if we should just base there or put a couple nights in somewhere else. We will have a car. I was thinking about going to the Cow Ball at Ukanc on Sunday the 15th, so we could stay in Ribcev Laz, but I don't want to be locked in to that.

So far, we'd arrive at KG on a Monday, perhaps Sunday, and the following Monday night we need to spend rather near Salzburg for a Tuesday afternoon international flight home from Munich. I haven't figured out our last day yet, we'd need to drop the car in Salzburg probably Monday (that's a whole nother question).

If you are planning to spend all your time between say Vršič Pass and Bohinj, my personal preference would be to minimize lodging moves and to stay 6 nights in one spot. I spent 5 nights in Ukanc to explore the area above. Kranjska Gora has the advantage of having more restaurants and lodging options (more than what is in Ribcev Laz, too). I spent a few hours there and liked it.

If you were thinking about going a bit farther afield to take in another area for a couple of nights, I would suggest considering either...

  • The Logarska dolina. it's a gorgeous drive from Bled area to Logarska dolina. In some areas, it's a narrow 2 lanes and winding but this anxious driver never felt uncomfortable driving it. The Logarska dolina itself has a grand view and there is plenty of hiking all around. This website includes hiking options for the area: https://www.solcavska-panoramska-cesta.si/en/
  • The Soča Valley. On the other side of the Vršič pass is another great area with a beautiful turquoise river running through it. Again, lots of great hiking options. WWI History (including a museum at Kobarid). Very cool.

You can't go wrong in Slovenia. The whole country is lovely. There is a mom that has a really nice travel site with lots of photos from her family's trip to Slovenia: https://www.earthtrekkers.com/10-days-in-slovenia-itinerary-road-trip/
