Hello all,
I am visiting Slovenia this fall for about two weeks. As part of our trip, we are planning to spend four nights in the Karst region, touring the caves, checking out the Lipica Farm, wine tasting, eating, walking, etc. I want to stay on a tourist farm that produces its own food and wine. Besides the one in the RS guide, do any of you have any personal experience with any? There seem to be 100s of them, and very few are reviewed on Tripadvisor or booking.com. But they all look interesting! I’m curious if you have any suggestions based on experience. Thanks!!
There are dozens and dozens of them (heck, could even be hundreds) and all will at least partially produce their own food and wine - that's one of the legal requirements to become a "turistična kmetija" (tourist farm/agriturismo). If you are looking for quality wine production, look for farms that sell bottled wine on the side. I'd probably just pick one that has the amenities you are looking for and has a good location that will suit your needs. All that I've visited so far (too many to list) had good home-cooked meals and at least decent wine.
Thanks, Dejan! The sheer number of options was overwhelming me, even though they all sounded great. I ended up making a reservation for three nights at Tourist Farm Arkade. It turns out that a friend of mine stayed there a few years ago. The farm makes their own wine, raises pigs (and makes prsut) and is conveniently located. I’m sure it will be fun and interesting, and the food sounds great. I’ll be there in two weeks!
Arkade Cigoj is a great choice, they specialise in pork but I had some wonderful capon (kopun) for lunch the last time I visited.
Hi Dejan,
We enjoyed our stay at Arkade Cigoj. They were very busy - completely booked for Restaurant Week - so we only got to eat dinner there once. But the region was a wonderful place to visit.
