What is the best town to stay in in the Julian Alps. We will be there for two nights and want to do some hiking. I don't want to have to drive from Ljubljana for the hiking so I prefer to stay near trails where we can get out in the morning and spend the day hiking. I would like a town , if possible, that is quaint but has access to restaurants and grocery stores.
The best town depends on what you want to see and do. Lake Bohinj is inside Triglav National Park and is a paradise of hiking/ biking around the turquoise glacial-fed lake. Kayaking and canoeing on the lake are also options. There are several villages near Lake Bohinj. Two of the closest are RIBCEV LAZ and UKANC— both about 2 hours by bus from Ljubljana.
Still inside Triglav National Park and offering hiking to waterfalls and river rafting on the turquoise Soca River is the mountain town of KOBARID. KOBARID is 3 hours by bus from Ljubljana.
