What does this mean for we who plan to travel next May from Venice to Ljubjiana before coming back to Trieste to catch a cruise? The article I just saw says it is due to increased illegal entries across the Slovenian border and the increased threat of terrorism because of the conflict in the Middle East.
It just means that you might have to go through a passport check when going from one country to the other. No big deal as long as you always have your passport on you.
Wow! I didn't know borders can close between two EU countries! I thought the whole point of the EU (or one point) was the open border issue.

Open borders are part of Schengen, not the EU.
Got it. And when we say Schengen, helpful to say Schengen Treaty or Schengen Area, depending on what Schengen one refers to; it helps to clarify to those of us who don’t know the jargon.
;-)
Yep - just give yourself more time.
And don't think this border have ever been completely open anyway. A few years ago, back in 2017, I took a bus from Ljubljana to Treiste. Our bus was stopped at the Italian border for a passport check which took about twenty minutes. We didn't have to get off the bus; our passports were collected, taken off the bus and checked, then returned to us. If I were to guess, I'd expect something like that in the near future with these changes.
Wow. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, but more reasons to hope and pray that this latest war is resolved peacefully soon.
