My husband and I will be in Slovenia the beginning of October. We have a rental car for the duration and are interested in Vrsic Pass, after spending one night in Kranjska Gora. Then we are looking for a central place to stay 4 nights as we want to do day trips to Pula area, Bled/Bohinj, and around. I realize we will have some long drives, but that is perfect for us! We love to putter around the coutryside. That being said, where should we make a home base? Any suggestions for accommodations? We prefer hotels and apartments to home stays.

Would you consider a longer stay in Kranjska Gora to use it as a base for Bled/Bohinj and then move to a base closer to Pula?

I will spend 8 nights in Slovenia in October. Home bases will be Bovec, Ljubljana and Piran.

Pula is far from the only interesting place on the Istrian Peninsula (consider also Rovinj, Porec, Vrsic, Groznjan and Motovun), so I'd want to spend at least two nights down there to avoid repeatedly driving back and forth between Istria and a base farther north. You can use ViaMichelin to check estimated driving times, keeping in mind that they do not include stops, navigational errors, traffic tie-ups, the search for parking, or walking from your parking place to what you actually want to see.
You didn't mention the very nice city of Ljubljana. It would be relatively easy to visit Bled and Bohinj from there. Even Kranjska Gora is estimated to be just a 70-minute drive from Ljubljana.

Acraven…oh yes! We will be enjoying Ljubljana as well…have 2 days planned for there!. And by saying Pula, I just mean we intend to drive down to the tip of Istria. There are so many routes to take, I don’t see us back tracking on the same highway too often. We have considered Motovun as a good base too.
Dave….that is probably what we will do… split our time up and spend 2 days in Kranjska Gora, then move down to one of the Istrian Peninsula locations for 3 more days.
Mignon…..Bovec was a consideration, but we do want to drive the Vrsic Pass north to south so thought KG might be a better base for us
