Heading to Slovenia, and wondering if I may be trying to do too much stuff a couple of the days.

Hi everyone, I’m a solo traveler going to Slovenia and Austria for around 2 weeks. I’ll be starting in Slovenia and then heading to Salzburg, Lunersee and Innsbruck before heading back to Slovenia to fly home. I will be renting a car for the entirety of the trip.

I am hoping to fit in all of Predjama castle, Postojna Caves, Skocjan caves and Piran in a single day. Dinner in Piran. I could potentially cut one of the 2 cave systems, but really would prefer to see both if possible.

On a different day, I would like to do Vrsic pass, Lake Jasna, Soca Valley, Triglav national park, Lake Bohinji, on my way to Kosec to stay at the Tourist Farm Kranjc.

Every other day is much more spread out, and I am considering adding an extra day, so I’m not rushing out of Salzburg on my way to Ljubljana on my second last day.

Thank you so much for any insights.

There are day trips from Ljubljana that include Predjama, Postonja and Piran. So, it’s possible to do a lot, but both caves will be a bridge too far. Neither of them open until at least 10am so it’s not like you can get that early of a jump. I’m not clear where this day is starting, so if you’re in the area that helps a little but still probably not much. At Skocjan you can skip the hike after and shorten the visit, but that’d be kind of a bummer imo.

As for the other day? That’s worse? You just named half the natural sights in Slovenia. You just need to scale things back. I would suggest in general that you keep your zone of operations to the south of Triglav and Vogel mountains and leave out Lake Bohinj. That way you’re just dealing with a sweep south along the E61 with the caves and Piran, then north to Soca Valley and beyond to Austria (if that’s the timeline.)

Driving around here’s not bad, but it can be a little demanding. Lots of twisting roads and local traffic, which can take it out of you.

I agree that seeing Skocjan Caves AND Postojna Cave is impractical when you also want to include Piran and Predjama Castle during the same day.

The Skocjan Caves are fantastic and also are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Because of this and the Disney-esque amusement ride-quality of the Postojna Cave, I would prioritize the Skocjan Caves.

@awrzesinski Thank you.

I would be starting in Ljubjana and my first stop would be the Castle and surrounding area, it opens at 9am, so I wouldn't be at either cave site until after 10 anyway. Postojna caves are closer to Predjama so I would try to do those first if possible. However, I am considering adding an extra day at the end of the trip so I am not rushing back to Ljubjana from Salzburg, which would allow me to do Vrsic Pass and lake Jasna on my second last day on my way back and stay in Kranjska Gora if I don't feel like driving back to Ljubujana in the same day. I also believe that would allow me to do Postojna Caves on my last day which right now is essentially drive to Ljubjana and spend the day there

Ah, that makes more sense then. In the interest of maximizing time, RS says the castle interior is skippable. If you’re seeing Skocjan after Postonja, you can decide on the spot if you want to extend the hike after the cave. While I recommend it, you’re fighting for time and it’s certainly not critical to the visit. That seems pretty manageable from here. In Piran, I’m still dreaming about the calamari at Fritonlin Pri Cantani. Pavel was also really good.

I’ve been hearing that Vrsic pass was closed in my trip prep this past year, so I’d double check the road status there. It sounds like you’re currently planning on a last night in Ljubljana. I’ll never not be ok with a night in Ljubljana, but you might consider spending the night in Lake Jasna or Bled and drive right to the airport from there. Bled is about equal distance from the airport as Ljubljana.

So, I am pretty sure that I have decided to do Skocjan caves and Piran in one day and then Soca and Triglav in one day, on my way to Kosec to stay at the Tourist Farm.

Then i will do Vrsic pass and Lake Jasna on my way back from Salzburg. Depending if it’s open of course

Then the final day, I will go check out Predjama castle and Postojna caves.

I’ll definitely look into staying in Bled for my final night.

Much appreciated
