Hi there,
Has anyone flown from Ljubljana to Munich? I am wondering about the size of the plane when it such a short flight. We are looking at Adria Airways. I do not like flying and I am especially nervous on smaller planes. Any comments about flying out of this airport or any comments on another carrier other than Adria Airways would be especially helpful.
Thanks. Barbara
You can find out which plane they are planning to use when trying to book a ticket. I looked on Google Flights. I see for one of the two flights a day to Munich, they use a smaller Bombardier CRJ900 jet and for another use an Airbus A319, which would be larger.
There's also a direct train that takes about six hours. Given that the train takes you from city center to city center, and you have to be at the airport early, flying might save you only three hours or so.
You can look up the aircraft type, seating arrangement at www.seatexpert.com.
BTW, the nonstops are A319 twin engine jets with 135 seats, not exactly small planes.
I have not flown Adria Airways. However I know how to look up the aircraft operated on specific routes and Adria operates an Airbus 319 from Ljubljana to Munich and not the loud propeller duck your head when getting on type plane

Otherwise take the 6 hour train.
I have flown Adria Airways many times. The planes are smaller Bombadier jets. They aren't turboprop, you will be very safe.
I have flown this route, and others. If you fly during the day you will love flying over the Alps. Ljubljana says it is the sunny side of the Alps!
Going from Ljubljana to Munich, I would take the train, day or night options, wouldn't even bother with flying. Both options easily doable.
Take the early morning train for a direct connection to Munich.
A thought.
Train is 6 hours, city center to city center.
Ljubljana airport is 45 minutes or so by bus, add the two hours minimum ahead of flight, flight is 1 hour 5 minutes, deplaning, getting to train, and trip into Munich at least another hour. IS the time saved really worth the hassles?
Thanks everyone for all of the useful tips. We are leaning towards taking the train but were a bit confused when looking at the online timetable. We will be staying in the central part of Munich quite close to the train station. Any information on booking on line station to station would be very helpful.
Thanks.
Barb
You can book on dbbahn at bahn.de, if it is already on sale. For example, I just looked at Ljubljana to Munich , mid week, mid mat, 1 change in Munich East station to the get to the main station, 39€, 9:22 to 15:49.This is for advance, 2nd class, no exchange. Price may vary depending on day of week. For the loss of 1 hour in exchange for way less rushing around and a scenic journey, along with money savings, this would be a no-brainer for us (and a possible future itinerary since a flight home would be much less expensive from Munich than Ljubljana)
There is also bus service. Some buses are scheduled to take less time than the train, though with traffic you can never be sure. If purchasing tickets in advance I'd take the train because it's likely to be more comfortable. For last-minute trips, I'd consider the bus because of the likely price differential.
Does anyone know the direct route from station to station? Which stop do I get on the train in Ljubljana and which stop do I get off the train in Munich? I am not sure if I need to be this precise when booking online beforehand.
Thanks.
You do need to be precise. The name of Ljubljana's main station is simply called "Ljubljana." There will be only one stop in Ljubljana for this train; if it's direct you know you've got the right station name. In Munich, you probably want München Hbf as the station.
You might want to get off at Munich Ost if it is closer to your hotel. The Super Sparpreis option does not include local transport. But if you know your hotel is close to a particular S-Bahn station, you could specify the endpoint as that station and the ticket would include that leg.
Example: Your hotel is close to Munich Marienplatz. You then buy the ticket to that destination and will say take the train to Munich Ost and change to the S-Bahn to Marienplatz.
There is one train station only in Ljubljana, and you can reference it on the city map. It is a 10 minute walk from the Triple Bridge. Similarly reference the Munich Ost station, where you would change trains, from there it is 3 stops on the S trains to Marienplatz, no need to go to the Munich Hbf just to take take the same S trains 2 stops in the opposite direction back to Marienplatz.
We just booked a hotel that is next to the Munchen hauptbanhof station. Thanks to one and all for all of the helpful suggestions. If anyone has any recommendations of things to do in Munich, I would appreciate it. We are art/history lovers and we will have 3 full days in Munich before we return home. Also we will have an extra day in Ljubljana after the tour so any recommendations on things to do here as well would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
You're visiting Salzburg too? Easy day trip from Munich by train. You might even consider spending a night there on the way to Munich...
Hi,
Near Munich Hbf are several hotels and Pensionen with varying degrees of luxury. I stay in a hotel/Pension near Munich Hbf too.
Which hotel did you choose?
As you are interested in art, Munich has 3 famous art museums...Alte Pinakothek and the Neue Pinakothek, and the newest, Pinakothek der Moderne. The first two I saw ages ago but not the third one.
Had to laugh at that. That's a very loaded term with direct historical references given its historical era.
We were in Salzburg years ago. I think we will just be planning things to do in Munich. We will probably visit the art museums and take some walking tours. We are staying at the Eden Hotel Wolff in Munich for 4 nights. We are using our points in Ljubljana and staying an extra night after the tour and will be staying at the Four Points by Sheraton. Thanks again everyone for all of the useful information. I really appreciate how helpful everyone is on the Rick Steves' travel forum. Has anyone been on the Best of Eastern Europe Tour? As well, we were in Prague last year on the Berlin, Prague and Vienna tour so if anyone has any tips on things to do in Prague other than what the tour will be doing, I would appreciate it.
Ganz und gar nicht ! When you see the history documentary film on this topic, that was the title of the banner used to describe that sort of art in "their" view. That is what one keeps in mind , ie in "their" view.
How far in advance would people recommend getting the train tickets?
When are you going? At least a couple of months, but there is no guarantee when the cheapest tranche of tickets will sell out and the price will go up. Buy as soon as your plans are set in stone to be sure of getting the lowest price.
Any recommendations as to whether to buy the train tickets plus reserve seats or just tickets? We're not going until the end of the summer. I just like to plan ahead - get all of the fine details worked out and then I can concentrate on planning what to see and do when there.
Thanks.
