Driving Rental Care from Lake Bled Area to Kobarid

We are traveling with four adults throughout Slovenia for 22 days this Sept. Based upon much of what I have read driving seems to give us the most flexibility to come and go as we want but mostly to see may of the areas that may not be served easily by public transportation. During one portion we will be driving from Lake Bled area to Kobarid. A simple Google map search on directions indicates it sill be approximately a 60 mile trip and we can take either a northern or southern route.

Tentative activities while in Lake Bled are the lake, the castle, Vintgar Gorge, Radovljica, and Lake Bohinj. In Kobarid we have penciled in the Soca Valley, Vrsic Pass Loop, Triglav Park, and the Grand Canyon of Soca. We have three nights planned in each location. Any comments or information about these tentative ideas welcome.

My real question is are there pros or cons to either the northern route or southern route? Will we be driving through areas we plan to see during our stay in Kobarid?

Thank you for thoughts

If you take the southern route from Bled, you’ll first pass nearby Lake Bohinj and then through the scenic areas of Most na Soci (with its turquoise lake) Tolmin ( where the Tolmin Gorge hike is located) then finally. Kobarid. It’s all uniquely scenic.

If you go to Lake Bled by car, be very carreful, because it is a very dangerous city. The 8th of may 2025, I let my car two hours at the only free car park of the city (Betin park, along the climbing road arriving at the city center), and found it back with a window broken, and my travel bags stolen. When I filed a legal complaint, the local police explained me that a group of Boscniac gypsies settled in the neighboroud two years ago, they spend their days robbing the tourists and causing havoc. And no one tries to solve the problems, the mayor even tries to hide the problems. For example there used to be warning panels on the parking I had my window broken, asking tourists not to let anything visible in their car, due to the risks of theft, but the mayor of Bled had them removed in order to "protect the reputation" of his city. Lake Bled is very nice, but Bled city is very dangerous : if you visit it, you should be extremely careful about yourself and your belongings.
