Driving from Ljubiana to Split

What do you all recommend for getting from Ljubiana to Split? I want to take a week and explore before I take a one week cruise from Split. I know that renting in one country with drop off in another adds around $400. Any suggestions and itinerary?

If you want to avoid the dropoff charge, a bus to Zagreb is easy and you can rent the
car there.

Another option is to take a train from Ljubljana to Rijeka, and rent the car.
