Day trip, Ljubljana to Trieste

Hi again. A day trip to Trieste seems much more sensible than to Venice which was my original post. I welcome anyone’s comments/hints. There’s a bus service called FlixBus with cheap fares and a hop on hop off bus in Trieste that looks promising. I have been many places in Italy but not Trieste. Comments? Reminders: I’ve been to Slovenia before on a Rick Steves tour, so feel like I don’t need more time in Ljubljana or Lake Bled.

I enjoyed a day wandering Trieste and visiting the elegant Revoltella Museum, with art and sculptures arranged in beautifully period-decorated rooms. Closed on Tuesdays.

If you don't mind driving, it's an easy, easy drive from Ljubljana. Rental cars are available at an Avis counter inside the Grand Union hotel in the center of Ljubljana. On the way to Trieste, you could stop in Lipica to see the stallions.

Make sure the hop on - hop off bus is actually operating - when I was in Trieste last month, it wasn't running for the season yet.

You could actually take the train to Trieste now if you want - there's an early morning train though it might cost a little more than the bus (and take longer). FYI, if you take FlixBus, I highly recommend getting their app if you have a smart phone; the FlixBus I took from Ljubljana to Trieste a few years ago was 45 minutes late. I would never have guessed it was still coming (or that I had gotten something wrong about the time or pick-up spot) if not for the update messages sent to me from the app telling me the bus was on its way. Had there been a direct train to Trieste at that time, I would have taken it.

I wasn't really a big fan of Trieste myself - some people like it, some don't. There are some neat towns in Slovenia besides just Ljubljana and Bled. It's easy to get by bus to Skofja Loka, by train to Radovljica, Kamnik, etc. All are nice little towns worthy of a visit, though they are quite a bit smaller than Trieste.

Thanks for the helpful replies! Yes, the bus is like Megabus here in the US. Cheap but not always reliable. I will also look into some all day tours from Ljubljana that go someplace besides Lake Bled.
