Courmayeur, Italy or Soca Valley in Solvenia?

Hello! My husband and I are thinking of visiting Solvenia for our 15 wedding anniversary next year. The photos we've seen of the Soca Valley look amazing! We will be bringing our 8-year-old son. He'll be 9 entering 3rd grade by the time we travel.

The last family trip we took to Europe was to Les Houches, France (near Chamonix). We also took day trips to Italy near Courmayeur. We loved how friendly the people were. The food was amazing and there was lots to do like hiking, going into little shops and enjoying great restaurants. The outdoor beauty was amazing and out trip revolved around day hikes. We could stare and up at the mountain all day long.

After that amazing trip, I am exploring the idea of visiting Slovenia. Honestly, I'm worried that I won't be quite as impressed by Slovenia, but I would still love it. What were your thoughts on Slovenia? Was there lots of natural beauty? Would you take an 9 year old there? What did you like/dislike about it? I'm open to new and different experiences. I like that Slovenia wouldn't be as touristy. I love that I could visit both Slovenia and Croatia during the trip.

We went on the RS Adriatic tour in May and loved Slovenia. We stayed several days prior to the tour in Ljubljana and thought that it would be a great base for a longer stay. You can take day trips to Lake Bled, the mountains, caves.... We stayed at Central Comfort Apartments Mescanka. It was a one bedroom with a sleeping loft that your son would probably love. And it was in a very central location (booked through Booking.com). I would go back in a heartbeat!

I would wholeheartedly agree with payntertex and go to Slovenia. Was there lots of natural beauty? Yes! We also took the RS Adriatic tour. We were there in September of 2018 and loved Slovenia. We stayed in Ljubljana for 2 nights prior to the tour. We didn't want to leave! We also stayed at Meščanka Apartments. We also booked through Booking.com. We had a river view apt. that was wonderful. The one bedroom with loft would be perfect for your family. It is in a central location and minutes to our favorite restaurant- Julija. Ljubljana is my favorite city in Europe. Like payntertex, we would go back in a heartbeat! Enjoy your planning. ;)

I spent 25 days in Slovenia in August/September 2019. My original plan was something like 13 days in Slovenia, Croatia, and Bosnia.
BUT I kept finding more and more I wanted to do in Slovenia. So... it became 13 days in Slovenia, then 13 days in western Slovenia, then 25 days in western Slovenia.

I wrote a trip report, if you are interested in knowing how I spent my time there. And, yes, there is much natural beauty. My summary? "Slovenia is awesome. It’s a beautiful, clean country with absolutely lovely, kind people. It rocketed towards the top of my list of favorite countries."

Oh yeah, I was probably a little too hard on Lake Bled 🙂.
