Charm in Ljubljana or Lake Bohinj

We are looking for a place to stay in Lake Bohinj or Ljublijana that has some character or charm. We usually stay in b&bs but a agritourismo or farm stay would be good too. We were originally going to stay in Lake Bled but after reading this forum we decided we needed to change our stay. We have 5 nights to spend plus another 3 in Kobarid. This is part of a 5 week trip that includes Northern Italy and Plitvice Lake in Croatia. We will have a car and we do not want self contained. We prefer staying in one place as long as we can and doing day trips from there. We want to visit Ljublijana but don't care about night life so don't have to stay there. We prefer a glass of wine while enjoying scenery at the location we are staying. We love to get out in the country and hike and enjoy trying the food and wine of the area as well as some photography
.
Thanks for your recommendations!.

Lake Bohinj and Ljubljana each have different kinds of charm, obviously. Bohinj is very back-to-nature and undeveloped, with barely a town to stay in. Ljubljana is a small, charming capital city with pretty architecture and a lively vibe due to the large population of college students. But it's never felt like a "party town" to me. I have no interest in "night life" either, but Ljubljana is positively adorable when everything is lit up at night, with cute little bridges crossing the tiny river, the castle up on the hill above, etc.

If you like cities, I think you'll love Ljubljana. If you don't or prefer the "back to nature" experience, you'll probably like Bohinj better.

As a compromise, you could stay in an old town Skofja Loka or like Radovljica near Bled. It would be much quieter at night, but you'd have more "night life" (restaurants, etc.) than you would staying out by Lake Bohinj.

I can't speak to Lake Bohinj, but we did stay in Ljubljana 4 nights this past September. As previously mentioned it's charm and vibe is captivating. We enjoyed the scenery at a lovely view apartment on the river. Perfect setting to enjoy your wine, great food and photo opportunities! Ljubljana is a pedestrian friendly city. We were so comfortable there that we didn't want to leave. Ljubljana is our newest favorite city. Great base city as well. Highly recommend Mescanka Apartments. Very well appointed. www.mescanka.si. They use Booking.com. Very pleased with the booking & followup with the staff at apartment. Great customer service. We especially appreciated their cancelation policy.

Thank you for your replies. I was looking for a recommendation of an accommodation that has some character. The apartments look like they're nice and in a great location but are self catering. We would like a place that serves breakfast as we have such a long trip planned we don't want to bother with bringing food along and don't want to take the extra time to go out to breakfast. A b&b is usually perfect but I'm having a hard time finding one that is charming in these areas.
Any ideas?

Like you, we prefer hotels & B & B's that provide breakfast. Another suggestion is Adora B & B that is 5 min. from Mescanka. Still in the river area. Another option is Lesar Hotel Angel near Mescanka. Some friends stayed there and were very pleased. If you prefer to look at the old town area, we would recommend Hotel Mrak. We stayed here 2 nights at the start of our RS Adriatic Tour. We booked our accommodations in Ljubljana 10 months in advance. Mrak Hotel was booked. That is why we chose the apartment. Another resource is the RS Croatia/Slovenia guidebook. All of these accommodations are recommended in the guide as well as from contributors on this Forum. Hope this helps.
