We are arriving in Ljubljana by train on Christmas Eve. While we plan to walk around the city the first two days, we would like to rent a car for excursions. We have an Air BnB in the Stari Trg area. It would be nice to get a car when we arrive and drive to the train station for our morning train 12/310. But, the Hertz counter in the train station is closed during the holidays. We are not familiar with Sixt car rental or some of the types of cars they have. Is it feasible to walk to Grand Hotel and rent from Avis there? Then we will pay to park somewhere. Any advice is appreciated.
Stari trg to the train station is 15 minutes on foot, the first half of which is through the pedestrian area, so a car wouldn’t really help you get to the train station any faster. You would also have to leave your car in a parking garage at the edge of the central area. In the time it would take you to get to the garage, get in the car and drive to the station, you could reach the station on foot. Save your money and skip the car for the two days you wouldn’t need it and save the rental fees + €30 per day on parking. Just rent the car on your excursion days.
Also, if you’re worried about luggage, take a taxi to Gornji trg and walk the couple of minutes to Stari trg, it’ll be much less than the added cost of having a car for the two days. I recommend Cammeo, they’re a good respectable taxi company. You could also simply walk, it’s a very walkable city.
Thank you! That's very helpful.
Thank you again for the tips! You were right - parking was really challenging and expensive, especially with the Christmas market in full swing! We had a very good experience with our rental from the Grand Union Hotel and walked to and from the train station with no problems. (And, enjoyed a stop for bureks and yogurt on the way to our departing train,) What a beautiful place!
