Car rental in Ljubljana

Any recommendations or warnings regarding car rentals in Ljubljana? I read some pretty bad reviews of Avant Car Agency and was told that it would be better to stick with a US based company such as Avis or Hertz. Is this true, or were the bad reviews a rarity?

You'll certainly find bad reviews of Avis and Hertz if you look.

I rented from Avant in Ljubljana in May just for a day and had no problems. They were professional, and the car was in good shape.
I've rented cars before numerous times in Europe and they were as good as if not slightly better than anyone else. They were going to overcharge me by mistake for the cost of rental but at the last minute caught it themselves (I would have missed it) and re-wrote the contract in my favor before I drove away with the car.

I've also rented from Sixt there at the train station. I would rent from either again.

The main thing is to understand the insurance and add-ons, so you aren't surprised when you show up to pick up the car. The car will come with liability insurance, but you'll have to pay for various coverage of damage to the car. You can pay more to get better coverage (lower deductible or higher "excess").

Some people use their credit card's rental car insurance benefit to cover this insurance. I did have a bad experience once (in Slovenia) where my Amex card's supposed insurance company did not cooperate with the Croatian car company - never figured out who dragged their feet (probably both parties), but I never got paid for my valid claim. That is one reason people might suggest a US car company like Hertz, who might work better with a credit card's insurance company - but you might also pay a lot more to rent the car, and if you just buy the full insurance with the local car company anyway, it still might be cheaper. If you can rent the car from Hertz for the same price as from Avant, I'd probably get it from Hertz - but I wouldn't pay more to rent it from Hertz.

Always take pictures of the car when you pick it up to record its condition, even if you go over it with the agent and fill out the paper showing any defects. Expect to return the car full of fuel. And if you return the car after hours (I did that with Avant), again take pictures of the car (and the dash showing fuel level, etc.) with your phone or a camera, etc.

As I understand it, you need an International Driving Permit (IDP) as well as a valid driver's license in your own country. The car company probably won't ask for the IDP, but if you ever get stopped by the police or have an accident, you may need to produce it.

Suggest you start by going to expedia.co.uk., click on rental cars, and a grid should pop-up from the different agencies with their selection and prices. We used Hertz from the grid and the price and service was smooth and professional. The only additional charges were for a drop charge on the coast, and the SCDW that I always buy in the EU. Think my total for 4 days was €166 including the fuel option.
One thing to keep in mind is that the city rental offices close at noon on Saturday so we had to go to the airport as we arrived around 3p.m.

We really had a good experience with Enterprise. They picked us up at our hotel in the pedestrian area, drove us to their office for the paper work and gave us maps with some good suggestions of places to see . Could not have asked for better service!
