We (two fairly active oldsters) will hire a driver/guide to tour the Soca valley on a day trip from Ljubljana at the end of May which we can customize. Most interested in natural beauty, moderate walks, history, culture, and food. Cant see everything in a day, but which sites not to miss? Places that have been mentioned are: Kobarid museum, Vrsic pass, Tolmin gorge, Bovec, Great or Small Soca Gorge, Pericnik waterfall, Lake Jasna, Predel pass, fortress of Kluže, Kranjska Gora, Zelenci Nature Reserve, Sunil Water Grove, and Most na Soči. I’m sure they are all beautiful, but since we can’t see them all in a day, what route would you take and which stops would you make? We don’t want to be inside the car all day—want several short walks. And won’t be swimming, kayaking or zip-lining. Thanks so much for your help sorting this out.
Will you hike near Bohinj? After walking at Vintgar Gorge (long way back past the church) and Mostnica Gorge to Slap Voje, I realized that I could have skipped Tolmin Gorge. We liked the walk to Slap Kojak and seeing bunkers on the way back. Zelenci Nature Reserve is skippable IMO.
Thanks for your thoughts. No, we don’t plan to hike Vintgar Gorge. I’m hoping for as beautiful an experience elsewhere without the crowds. What were the other beautiful walks you had?
What do you think of this route, devised by Claude ai:
Russian chapel
Vrsic pass summit
Trent’s valley and source of the soca
Lunch in Bovec
Great Soca gorge
Kobarid museum
Napoleon’s bridge and riverside walk
Back to Ljubljana through tolmin and idrija.
Looks like a good route to me!
I liked Tolmin Gorge quite a bit... would give it a nod over Vintgar in that it was a little more natury and a little less touristy.
I don’t plan to go to vintgar gorge at all—tell me if I’m wrong. Since I have other options, I would avoid vintgar’s crowds, willingly give up some natural drama for peacefulness.
Hi Cookie,
Here's how I would proceed:
First of all, decide if you would prefer going over Vrsic Pass or Predel Pass.
Driving over Vrsic, you can visit the Soca Gorge and Lake Jasna (both by the road and quick visits) and potentially also do the short hike to the source of the Soca River. Driving over Predel, you can add Kluze Fortress to your itinerary and while not on your list, also Lake Predil as a stop, again both by the road. If driving over Predel, my personal preference is to drive north to south, from Kranjska Gora/Italy to the Soca Valley as you face Mt Mangart and the rock face of Loska Stena while descending into the valley. Approaching the tiny hamlet of Strmec is especially atmospheric. Vrsic offers great views in both directions and I would struggle to pick a favourite direction. Predel is the quieter choice of itinerary in terms of the number of fellow tourists you will encounter. One could argue for good reason, but I personally like both.
As for the sights north of the Julian Alps, both Zelenci and Pericnik are lovely stops, Zelenci perhaps the quicker option despite having more walking time than Pericnik, which is right next to the road. I would be prepared to skip either of these two sights due to timing, depending on how early or late in the day you will be starting and the traffic you might encounter.
The Kobarid Museum is a must if you are into history and the central part of the town of Kobarid is also of interest from an architectural point of view. I would not stop for too long or at all in Kranjska Gora nor Most na Soci given your tight schedule.
The Tolmin Gorge is a favourite of mine and a bit of a hike, especially due to the steps and inclines, but a good way to stretch your legs after sitting in the car for so long. Alternatively, an easier hike is Kozjak Waterfall, close to Kobarid.
I hope I have been of some help, if you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to reach out!
Safe travels,
Dejan
We were in Slovenia in June of 2025. We really enjoyed hiking at Tolmin in the late afternoon after visiting the Memorial Church of the Holy Spirit in Javorca midday and the WWI museum in the AM. If you're also adding in a drive over the pass, I don't think you'd be able to fit all of that in on a day trip.
Some notes:
Being in the car as my husband drove us up the very narrow supply road to Javorca was the most stressful travel experience of my life, but the church is a pretty special place.
We scheduled a tour at the museum and the man who took us around was very emotional sharing about the lives of the soldiers, so that was also impactful. We had hoped to walk the Kobarid Historical Trail after the museum and before Javorca, but our guide ran long so we had to abandon the full trail for an abbreviated version that evening.
Honestly, the whole area was lovely and we hope to go back to do it more justice. You cannot really go wrong with any of the options.
I had the same passenger experience in Canyonlands national park in Utah. While my husband drove the jeep up one switchback and down the next, cliff wall on one side and steep drop-off on the other—I got out and walked. Marriage survived.
Thanks for your Slovenia advice.
I also visited the Memorial Church of the Holy Spirit in Javorca. The road up to it is an old one-lane WWI military road. Definitely my most white-knuckle driving experience in Slovenia. I rounded a corner to meet a group of German cyclists speeding down the incline in front of me. All of us slammed on breaks. The lead German cyclist angrily shouted at me. I just kept driving -- not really my fault -- they took the risk of speeding down a one-lane former military road with sharp corners and met a car 🤷♂️.
At the top of the pass, you can park and walk maybe 15 or so minutes up to Postarski Dom for some food. Depending on your timing, you could make a nice meal out of it. We shared some delicious pork and potatoes. There are other longer hikes from various points on the drive that you could read about on the forum, but that would take away from time down in the valley. Personally, although we didn't do a longer hike on the pass so I cannot fully compare, I feel like the drive with some pauses for the views, plus the Tolmin hike or the Kobarid Historical Trail (which I believe would include a chunk of the Soca Gorge, or that would be easily added) would give a taste of both the Julian Alps and the valley below. Or make a loose itinerary and see what fits or calls to you. Have a lovely time!
