Bela Krajina Region

We are in the very early stages of planning a 12-14 day trip to Slovenia for June of 2025. We know we would like to see the Julian Alps and Ljubljana. We are interested in history, architecture, food, and low-key outdoor activities. We wouldn't mind renting a car at all and would prefer to be able to stay in a single location for 3-4 nights at a time. This forum and guidebooks seem to have plenty of information to draw from.

However, we would also like to visit Bela Krajina as I have some family history in that region, specifically Semič. I am wondering if anyone has spent time in the region, and also a logical way to split up a trip to Slovenia to include that region and the more traditional tourist stops.

Thank you!

Hi carlybean,
I'm following this topic--I have family history in that area, too, and am traveling to Slovenia this October. I am actually hiring a Slovenian genealogist to see if any of my ancestors' homes are still standing, and if I still have family in the area; if I do, he will arrange meetings if they are amenable. I thought this would be an amazing way to experience these small towns before moving on to the rest of the itinerary. If you're interested, I'm using this company--I've heard great things and Urban has been very responsive so far: https://www.ancestry-slovenia.com/

If you're into wine, the Posavska wine region is nearby.
