Just had a bad experience at Max's in Piran. Had rooms reserved for tonight. Confirmed the reservation a couple days ago. Showed up at 4:15 pm. No one ther.e. No indication of when someone would be there. Called the two phone numbers--no response. Waited two hours until 6:15 pm. Finally gave up as it was starting to rain, and booked at a more expensive place on the square. As of yet, no response to my e-mail.

Thanks for posting your experience, Matt. (I see that you probably posted this here because there is no page for Slovenia hotel reviews.) I have experienced no staff at small hotels if I arrived at "odd hours," but would expect someone around 5:00 at least. I'm curious whether your previous communications with them included any check-in instructions. Anyway, I'm glad that you found another option without having to go too far in the rain!
No, there were no special check in instructions, despite several emails in which they could have given them. Still no reply to my email either.
Since there is no similar thing on this board, make sure to post your experience on travel rating sites such as Tripadvisor to warn potential customers and (hopefully) force the staff to improve their service.
