August trip Slovenia

Would love some information on ideas for hiking locations toward the end of August. I know there will be more tourists but would like to see if we can get away from the crowds. Would love suggestions on where to stay and areas for outdoor activities. All input welcome.

I worked quite a bit of hiking into a 25-day trip to Slovenia in 2019. Here's the trip report that includes a thumbnail overview of each day: https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/trip-reports/25-days-in-slovenia

Copious hiking info on Slovenia's official tourism website: https://www.slovenia.info/en/things-to-do/active-holidays/hiking

The Cicerone guide to the Julian Alps details many hikes/walks: https://www.cicerone.co.uk/the-julian-alps-of-slovenia

If you want to get off the well-beaten US traveller path, consider the hiking options in and around the Logar Valley: https://www.solcavska-panoramska-cesta.si/en/where-to-go

Dave thank-you so much. I had read your trip report. Once we narrow things down I may have a few questions for you.

One of our favorite hikes of all times was to Slap (Waterfall) Mostnice from Lake Bohinj. There is a restaurant at the end of the trail that serves blueberry strudel that I dream about.

I am happy to answer any questions that may come up as you plan your trip.

As an aside, I did the Slap Mostnice hike at the suggestion of Emily and found it (and the blueberry strudel) to be quite enjoyable.

Thank you Dave. We are getting some firm plans on our flight arrival and departure.

If one flies into Venice, is the opti bus reliable and a good way to get to Slovenia? We are open to any other options. We need to fly Delta as we have credits that we need to use. Getting directly into Slovenia would be a pain as we would hav elong layovers in CDG or would have to train in from Munich. We are flying out of Atlanta.

I flew on a Delta ticket in/out of Ljubljana, but I paid for the ticket. Tickets with miles tend to need to be used on Delta flights (not partner flights) to get the best deal, so I understand your situation. Many here report using GoOpti, and I have seen nothing but positive reports from people who have used that service.

Jeanie, I've used Venice as an arrival or departure point for Ljubljana several times. It has worked well for me, just because I was able to get convenient flights via Venice e.g. direct on AA between PHL and VCE (using miles a few times).

The last time was last October. I flew home from Venice on that AA flight which fortunately didn't leave until after noon. I took a GoOpti shuttle from Ljubljana (took just under three hours). It worked fine for me. The company has a good reputation. But to get a good price for shared service, you need to book a bit in advance, not at the last minute (when sometimes they are fully booked).

There are also direct buses sometimes between VCE and Ljubljana. There are a few operators with scheduled service. I used DRD a few times, but they seem a bit flaky. Some people have complained about them not showing up as planned or getting no communications from them, but my DRD buses worked out fine.

Zagreb seems to work well too as a point of arrival/departure for some, though it never has for me. Just depends where you are starting out and ending I guess.

We went to Slovenia in July 2022 and absolutely loved it. Such a beautiful country. We had 3 bases. First Kranjska Gora, then Bled and last Portoroz. The Triglav National Park and surroundings is beautiful. Due to my back problems I can’t do long hikes but we did a short hike up to Slap Peričnik. Quite busy but so beautiful. Then we drove further up the road till we weren’t allowed to drive any further and did a short hike there (but there were longer hikes into Triglav NP). Much more quiet there. We also did a short hike around Mostnica Gorge. Also not too busy and very refreshing because there was a heatwave (for Slovenian Standards) while we were there. We visited the Tolmin Gorge. We took the cable car up to Vogel Ski Resort at Lake Bohinj. At Bled you can hike up to several viewpoints to see Lake Bled. But these were quite busy. And we did the Vršič pass by car from Kranjska Gora and just stopped along the way and did short strolls/hikes to viewpoints or walks along the Soča river at the end and drove back via Bovec, Tarvisio (Italy) , made a short stop at Lago Di Fusini (also beautiful) and back to Kranjska Gora. You will enjoy Slovenia. And although it will be more busy in high season and it was sometimes tough to find a parking space, it never felt cramped to me.

Thank you all for your suggestions. Andrew looks like the OPti shuttle will be our best option. We are exploring suggested bases for our hiking and sightseeing. We really want to get our and see the beauty of the mountains. Even considering some hut to hut hiking.
