Advice for travel Zagreb - Ljubljana

Hi, we are on a RS Adriatic tour in September. We are flying to Zagreb from DFW via LRH and are supposed to arrive at 11 AM. I don't think we are doing a lot of sleeping on the planes. I am considering whether to overnight in Zagreb or to take the train over to Ljubljana right away. The problem is the train schedule does not seem to line up very well with our arrival. It looks like there are no trains until around 5 PM. So, I am thinking overnighting in Zagreb will be necessary.

However - according to Deutsche Bahn, it looks like there is a bus that might work, timewise. Any experience with taking the bus on that route?

Thanks.

You'll probably find more buses if you go on www.buscroatia.com - but you'll probably need to get from the airport to the main bus station and connect to the bus to Ljubljana.

Or try GoOpti to arrange a shuttle from the airport, if it's cheap enough.

The Euroline Croatia website returned no offerings Zagreb/Ljubljana. The Euroline Slovenia website shows service to Hungary and Germany but nowhere else.

I am also looking at a car service option.

We took the train from Zagreb to Ljubljana a few years ago. It takes about two hours and twenty minutes and it's a really pretty ride. Looking at a random day in September, since I don't know when you're traveling, I see a 12:35pm train, which arrives in Ljubljana at 3:10pm. I'm looking at the Rail Europe site, which I don't buy from since they add a service fee, but even the Rail Europe price is only $40. The airport is only about 6 miles from town.

If you do find that you are going to overnight in Zagreb anyways, you'll find it to be a pretty neat city. It has an honest city feel to it, not touristy, but with a fantastic main square, inexpensive food and endless outdoor markets and cafes. I really enjoyed it.

I noted the 12:35 departure. Our British Airways flight is scheduled to arrive in Zagreb at 11:50 AM (I said 11 AM earlier, in error). This is what I meant by "does not seem to line up very well with our arrival".

We used GoOpti and it worked out flawlessly. The ride is a couple of hours, including a wait at the border to clear Slovenia passport control. When Croatia becomes part of Schengen this will help, but they aren't there yet.
