3 nights in Bled too much???

I am participating on the RS Eastern Europe trip (this Fall) which ends on a Saturday after spending the last 2 nights in Bled. Post tour I will be traveling to Vienna for a few days.

Questions:
1. Should I stay in Bled a third night and travel to Vienna on Sunday (thinking lots of places are closed on Sundays and that would be a good day to travel)?
2. Is there another town en route that is worth visiting for the balance of Saturday and spending Saturday night vs leaving for Vienna once the tour ends?
3. Do I have to purchase train ticket for Vienna in advance?

I am a single female traveler and would prefer to arrive in Vienna during the day.

Thanks in advance for any advice/suggestions.

Bled is a pleasant little town, the lake and island are lovely. But I wouldn't invest 3 days there.

Not sure if the RS tour takes you up through the mountains to Vrsic pass - if not, I'd rent a car for the day and do that, it's beautiful.

You will save money if you buy your ticket to Vienna in advance on OeBB.at. A ticket bought today for travel tomorrow (Sunday) will be 63 euros or more. A ticket bought today for travel on a Sunday in late August can be purchased as a Sparschein ticket for 29 euros.

Trains from Lesce-Bled (the station nearest the town of Bled) to Vienna have a change at Villach. Or you can stay on the train to Salzburg and change there if you want to see Salzburg and overnight there. Then continue to Vienna the next day. This would be two separate tickets, and a slightly longer overall travel time.

If you take the Villach route, there is a train departing Lesce-Bled at 10:03 am, arriving in Vienna at 15:35. You will need some form of transport from Bled town to the station; there is a shuttle/taxi company that we used in the opposite direction.

We spent three nights at Bled as my husband had a rowing competition on the lake. We enjoyed the time there very much, but we are outdoor enthusiasts. In addition to the rowing, we hiked up to the top of the summer luge run and he rode down, and we rode bikes to the gorge nearby (I forget the name but it is one of the main ones) to hike there.

If you are not as interested in outdoor activities, then the overnight in Salzburg might be a nice alternative.

Lola,
The 10:03 train you suggested is perfect. From what I have been reading that particular ticket is for a NON reserved seat, is that correct?? I am assuming it would be the same for the connection in Villach. Would you have any suggestions for places to stay in Vienna near Old Town, Square, which I believe is referred to as the First District.

Hello from Canada. I completely agree with David. A day trip through Vrsic Trip is a must, stopping for a visit to Triglav National Park with the most beautiful lakes etc. We actually hired a driver so we didnt have to worry about anything (although I dont know why when we've driven through the Rockies LOL)...we just wanted to be free to view the scenery and stop at a moments notice for photo taking without having to worry about parking the car, anyway having a driver/guide pointing out highlights in the park and throughout the pass was worth the money for us. We stopped at a beautiful little place for lunch.

Have a wonderful trip.

I am not crazy about the town of Bled itself - it's OK and convenient for exploring the area around Bled, just not fun place to "be" at night. I much prefer Ljubljana, which is lively and charming and very pretty when lit up at night. Obviously, going back there from Bled is in the opposite direction so would add time to your ongoing trip to Vienna so may not make sense to you.

If you want another nice little town near Bled that has a little more "old town charm" than Bled, you might consider Radovljica. You could take a bus from Bled to get there. Radovljica is on the train line to Villach also - though there's not exactly a train "station" there, more of a stop. You could buy the ticket to Villach on the train but would need to buy the ticket from Villach to Vienna ahead of time online or at the station in Villach. Not every train to Villach might stop in Radovljica, though - check the schedule to make sure.
