We are planning a trip in June -- looking at staying Tourist Farm Kranjc, Tourist Farm Pri Plajerju, Stare Pension, or Tourist Farm Mulej. I was also curious about whether or not it is worth drive to Piran? Mostly we want outdoor activities and absolutely love the mountains, etc. We are taking our children who are 12 and 15 and would love to spend one night or possibly two in Austria? Can you easily drive a car to a mountain town in Austria? Or is it best to take the train? Any help on the above mentioned places to stay and any help with Itinerary would be appreciated.
The old part of Piran is worth a couple of hours to wander around, but I wouldn't go out of my way to see it. Except that it may be your only opportunity on this trip to visit an Adriatic seaside town, so it might be worthwhile for that. Compared to seaside towns in Croatia, it doesn't quite measure up, but it's definitely charming.
You could drive into Austria, but I wouldn't bother if your only goal is to visit a mountain town. The mountains in Slovenia are gorgeous, and you can find a lot of delightful mountain towns and scenery there to rival what you'll see on a quick overnight to Austria. And if you are going to venture to anywhere outside of Slovenia, you should make it Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia.
I am not familiar with any of the places you listed for lodging.
You'll definitely want to drive over Vrsic Pass, and you should spend some time in the Soca Valley.
The area around Bled and Bohinj is out of this world. You'll surely want to visit Vintgar Gorge. It was closed when I visited in 2014, but I did get to visit Tolmin Gorge, and that was great.
Do you plan to stay in one place the entire time, or are you going to move around. Slovenia is a small country, but not so small that I'd want visit every part of it as a day trip from a central location. And 11 days is a lot of time to see and enjoy it from multiple bases.
If you love the mountains, you will love Slovenia!
We plan to stay in about two places. So, what areas would you recommend for us to stay? Near Lake Bled, Bovec, Lake Bohinj, or the Kobarid? Or all they all quite comparable? If we did happen to drive into Austria for one day -- do you have any recommendations?
I think somewhere in the vicinity of Ljubljana or Lake Bled would be a good base for part of your trip, and then somewhere in the Soca Valley, like Kobarid or Bovec. I spent three nights in Ljubljana and really loved it, but since you seem more interested in the outdoors, basing yourself near Bled might make more sense.
If you want to hit Austria, there's a tunnel on the E61 (driving northwest from Bled) that heads to Villach, but I've never been there and can't tell you anything about it. To get to Vrsic Pass and the Soca Valley, you exit just before the tunnel and continue on route 201 to Kranjska Gora. From there, turn left onto the 206.
