10 nights: Bohinj, Ljubljana, Rovinj - suggestions, please!

Hello, travel community.

You've shared a lot of helpful advice about how to get to Slovenia. It's looking like flying in and out of Venice will probably work best for our schedule (and limited time).

We're traveling in mid-September. I'm hoping you can offer comments, suggestions, and advice on this very tentative itinerary, please:
- 1 night Venice (post flight); rent a car the following day.
- 2 or 3 nights in Bohinj: fly fishing, exploring sites, hiking, maybe
wine and cheese tasting, hopefully Cow's Ball (if it happens
https://rove.me/to/slovenia/cow-ball ). Stay at Hotel Stare.
- 2 or 3 nights in Ljubljana: enjoying river area, market, maybe a day trip. Stay at Lesar Hotel Angel or Hotel Mrak.
- 2 or 3 nights in Rovinj, Croatia: definitely wine tasting! Stay at Hotel Adriatic or Casa Garzotto.

These are all just first thoughts based on a great travel consultation and initial research. Thank you for helping to solidify our plans!

If you like nature, go for 3 nights at Bohinj. The Ukanc end of the lake (where your hotel is) is super quiet and super peaceful. I spent 25 nights in Slovenia in 2019 -- five of them at Villa Park B&B just down the road from where you are staying. The Kravji Bal (Cow's Ball) was my favorite thing I did in Slovenia. Your hotel is past the small wooden bridge where they charge people to enter the ball, so your hotel owner will hopefully give you "We're local" wristbands like the Villa Park owner gave me, which gets you into the ball for free.

For Ljubljana, I highly recommend the LjubljanaYUM food tour. It incorporates some Ljubljana sightseeing into a nice sampling of foods -- from old Slovenian favorites to trendy new restaurants to market samples to a coffee stop to dessert.

Thank you, Dave! I will definitely look into the food tour and look forward to the Cow’s Ball (fingers crossed)!

Rovinj - You will want a car to visit wineries. I find this website a great resource for us during our annual visits to Istria - https://www.frankaboutcroatia.com/wineries-in-istria-worth-visit/

In Rovinj, just avoid any restaurant with a sign in the front saying "Grill, Fish, Pasta, Pizza." This is about every restaurant on the marina. That said, Maestral Restaurant is good for a sundowner.

Haven't visited Bohinj but you will enjoy both Ljubljana and Rovinj! Lake Bled is an easy day trip from Ljubljana and there are several hill towns (i.e. Motovun, Grožnjan) close to Rovinj that make for a nice day trip.

If you are driving from Venice/Trieste area to Slovenia and Croatia, you will need to: 1. check one way drop off $$$$$ (in 2013, could have bought the car!); 2. travel passes for Slovenia & Croatia (at first gas stop each country); 3. check Italian insurance coverage in other countries (wasn't good). We ended up flying thru Venice for much less. Rented car in Zagreb, toured Slovenia, dropped off in Dubrovnik. We love all three countries - enjoy!

Thank you, Larry! I’d planned to rent and drop off a car at the Venice airport, so your point about ensuring that Italian rental car insurance extends well to other countries is a great one. I appreciate your sharing the caution.
