We are going to be in Slovakia and want to see if anyone has gone to many of the wooden churches, and are they worth the drives to go find and see them?
Yes they are worth the time. They are pretty amazing structures. All wood and no nails. Check out the Slovak Spectator for get guide books. Have fun.
Thank you! We will be checking them out!!
gw52fire which ones did you visit and which are maybe top 3 or 4 to visit? ANd thank you for this: https://www.folklorfest.sk/ very helpful
We have been to 3 or 4 of them but I honestly don't remember which ones. Also if you have a car other sites to visit are Cicmany, Vlkolinec, Orava Castle, Spis Castle , Trencin and the Castle there. There is also a great recreated Slovak village on the south side of Martin. I have also mentioned on this site there is a great Slovak/Hungarian/ Polish Festival the 1st weekend in July in Kezmarok. Many traditional groups performing dances and music. 100s of vendors with food and handmade crafts.
Thank you for your response and all the places you suggested. We will have a car and plan to see many of those places. Unfortunately we won't be there in July...that festival would be so awesome to see.
Over the years I have done both Banska towns, Martin (interesing castle hotel nearby), Bratislava (not terribly impressed), Kosice, Spis Castle, Štrbské Pleso, Poprad; mostly fishing trips with a little sightseeing.
So this year I decided to do something new and do my flshing in Slovenia. After a few weeks of planning I realized there was a reason I keep going back to Slovakia and dropped the Slovenia idea. The trip will be Budapest to Banska Stiavnica to Štrbské Pleso for a few nights of tourism. Then to Zakopane for the fishing for a few days. Then the trip back is a bit more direct. Zakopane to the wooden church at Hronsek to Oravsky castle to Budapest in a day. About 6 hours of drive time and four hours of sightseeing time so a long day, but ......
Here is my biggest difference, I dont drive .... period. So I am using daytrip.com. I could have reduced the cost a bit with some train service but just wasnt worth it. To be honest, having someone else do the driving looks to be about 300 euro more then if I had rented a car for a week, bought gas, paid tolls and paid for parking. And I figure I will have 2 or 3 hours more time for sight seeing and fishing as opposed to being lost and looking for parking. But i could be wrong.
pahendry, if any of this is of use to you, let me know and I will send you all of my details.
Happy trails .....
Mr E...thank you for all of the information. What is your favorite thing to do in Strbske Pleso? I'm guessing you fish in the lake there, but are there hikes around there? We probably won't be fishing, but we love to hike and see the area. Have you taken the cable car to Lomnicky Stit? I have a list of the places you and other people have suggested, plus everything I had planned way back during covid when we didn't get to end up going. I can't wait to get there and see as much as we can. Of course it always seems like there's more to see than time. Thanks again for the info.
Mr E...One more thing...we have been to Slovenia, and it is absolutely beautiful! Be sure you do go there one of these days. I'll be anxious to go back sometime.
Favorite thing to do in Štrbské Pleso is suck in the beauty and chill. One trek around the lake is a requirement I guess. But one of the finest hotels I have every stayed at is there and the beauty of the lake is amazing. The fishing is in the rivers near Zakopane. That will be a first for me. In the past have fished near Poprad and Martin.
This trip, because I will have the S.O. along for the ride I have to keep the fishing to a minimum, but the good part of that is it creates an excuse for a solo trip back to Bosnia for some serious fishing. I love riverside time in Bosnia. https://youtu.be/QNpUWXV3RkI?si=QbO9bxRydn-wKpr7
I have not taken the cable car to Lomnicky Stit, but it is on my itinerary for this trip. Trying to figure that thing out was a chore, but I think i have it now.
There is so much to see in Slovakia that its hard to know where to go first. I am fortunate in that I can pick it up in short trips when time is available.
I am certain Slovenia is beautiful. From here the logistics are just not as favorable. The distances is further and there isn’t anything near the midpoint of the trip going or coming that lights my fire like the sights in Slovakia do.
I will send you a link to what I have. Maybe something is useful. But still a work in progress.
Mr E - Thank you again for all of the information. That is a beautiful hotel in Bosnia. We went to Mostar a few years ago, but haven't spent much time there. I had hoped to hike at least a couple of the lakes around Strbske Pleso, but I found out there will probably still be snow on the ground. We may be lucky to do the first one near the hotel. (We'll be there in May). I'm sure we will enjoy our time in that area though, with so many things to see and do.
Mr E...what does "Rep of Texas" mean? Are you from Texas?
Mr E...what does "Rep of Texas" mean? Are you from Texas?
Yes, my home: Republic of Texas, est. 2 March 1836. I usually get asked what's a Magyarország.
That is a beautiful hotel in Bosnia.
But not the bargain it use to be. Last year the rates went up to 35 euro a night and the cheapest transfer from the airport I could find was 150 euro (about 3.5 hours of driving throught some pretty amazing country). You gotta get to places like Bosnia and Montenegro and to a large extent Slovakia before what happened in Croatia happens to them. I still think that for some strange reason, Slovakia is one of the great hidden marvels of Europe.
Mr E...ok...so what does Magyarorszag mean? We are looking forward to our trip to Slovakia and appreciate all of the information people have provided. We did go to Kotor, Montenegro on the same trip with Mostar, Bosnia. Both were very interesting and beautiful places.
It is the country generally called Hungary, but in the Hungarian language it is Magyarorszag. Listening to this will explain why we call it Hungary https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-JcWntcOv0
