Route Advice required

Hi there

We will be leaving Tarnow, Poland in the next couple of days and heading into Slovakia.

I have tried to do some research online as i dont have have a guide book for the country, we have already been to Bratislava so no need to go there this time.

I am not finding a lot of good information on where to go and what to see, so are really hoping someone here can assist. We travel permentantly in an overland truck, so time is not an issue. The next major destination after Slovakia is Budapest Hungary

What i have found so far is, Tarnow - Zakopane - Štrbské Pleso - Levoca - Spis Castle

Then there is the following places but there are long way west of Spis Castle and not sure if there are worth back tracking for

  • Ovra Castle - Donly Kubin - Ruzomberok - Vlkolinec - Liptovská - Banska Stiavnica

As mentioned time is not really an issue and we would like to see as much as the country as we can, just without doing a lot of backtracking and unless its definetly worth the diesel. Is there anything south of Spis Castle for instance ?

Thankyou
Wayne

I've been to most of the destinations you mention and I think that Slovakia is one of Europe's greatest secrets. Can't help you on a route because don't know your end point or how much time you have or your interests. But it's a great thru trip from Krakow to Budapest if someone has a good 4 to 6 days.

It's worth stopping in Prešov, which has a nice old town square, a historic synagogue, several historic churches, and some museums. Just outside of Prešov you can tour the opal mine and the old salt works (Solivar). You can read about our visit there in this post. Many people also like Košice, famous for its gothic cathedral, but I have not been there myself. In fact, I'd love to hear from others who have explored that city, as I may visit this coming year.

Don't know if this will help (I've never been to Slovakia), but I was just researching possible 2024 Jose Carreras (opera tenor) concerts and see 2 sheduled for feb 16 in Kosice. It was apparently rescheduled from July. SteelArena.sk Happy and safe travels. ET

We actually travel in expedition truck ( MAN 18t 4x4 motorhome), so dont need hotels as such.

I think we have decided to do the West Route, we are actually at Spis Castle now as we decided to check out Krynica-Zdrój in Poland as we heard it was a winter wonderland. Not so at the moment, hardly any snow and the whole town looks a little run down. We took the much smaller but shorter road from Lipany through Brezovička to here, an interesting drive indeed.

We will head towards Levoca tomorrow and then towards Štrbské Pleso, hope to use the train to see the area as the truck maybe a bit of a hassle especially to find parking.

I think we may add Cicmany and Vikolinec to the route you suggested.

Thanks so much for your information, if you think of anything else to add feel free to respond.

Thanks so much

Wayne, if you have not passed it , Orava Castle is one not to miss. Also Trencin Castle. There is a great recreated village in Martin. There might be special hours in the winter. Also the ice caves near Presov. Go to Slovakspector for more travel information.

Have fun.
