Recommended private guides in Slovakia

On our recent trip to Slovakia, we spent time with two different private guides, and I recommend them both. The first part of our trip we spent with Michal Razus of Slovak Ancestry, who I have recommended before on the forum (https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/trip-reports/a-september-week-in-spectacular-slovakia). He is based in Prešov. He did a great job scheduling our first few days, which involved family visits (and a lot of rapid translation!) as well as searching for and explaining significant sights. Michal has also helped me many times with my family history research and translations via email from the USA. We did not have the time to explore records on our visit, but if you are doing genealogical research in Slovakia, Michal is the one to help you.

Because Michal was booked for the rest of our time in the country, he recommended his friend Erik Ševčík of Adventoura Slovakia, who is based in Poprad. If you want to climb mountains, take long hikes, build and sleep in igloos, go bear- or chamois-watching, or engage in other highly active outdoor pursuits, he is your man—he does it all. We were a group of mixed ability, and Erik found us outdoor activities that were doable for the older, slower member of the group (me) and also interesting enough for the others. But he is more than an outdoor guide. He was invaluable when we met long-lost relatives, expertly translating during the resultant intense conversations, and as interested as we were in what we learned. He helped us understand an outdoor museum and a dairy farm, and kept us on schedule while remaining flexible on activities. Best day: a hike through and a campfire picnic in the mountain meadow where my ancestors would have grazed their cattle; Erik’s local knowledge made that possible.

Planning this trip has not been an easy task for you so I am really grateful that you are reporting back. I will get to Slovakia in the next couple of years, I think, and hope to gain from your experience!
