We will be in Dolný Kubin, Slovakia for a week in September. Our daughter is playing in a hockey tournament. We are thinking of renting a car in Krakow when we arrive and driving. Any advice about driving to and around the area? Thinking of day trips to smaller towns and Zakopane.

That's what i would do. This would make the best use of your time. There are many things you can do by car that would take longer if you were only using the train or bus. Plan to spend a few days in Krakow it's a beautiful small city that was untouched during the war. Auchwitz, Schindler Museum, the Salt mine, You will near Orava Castle, Martin has a great recreated Slovak village. Trencin has a great castle and town. And there's always Spis castle , it would be a couple hour drive. Zakopane is a beautiful place to visit as well. Also check Slovak Spectator for great guide books and information. Enjoy.
