Has anyone been to Banská Štiavnica? Is it worth a day trip when we are en route from Vienna to Budapest?

Been to both of the Banska towns. Enjoyed them both very much. Both worth 5 to 8 hours. Slovakia is one of my favorite places and we head back about every 18 months or so; fishing and sight seeing. How do you plan to visit them going between Vienna and Budapest? You pretty much have to drive.
If you want an easier stop over between Vienna and Budapest, then try Gyor and the Archabbey at Pannonhalma. Gyor is on the rail line almost exactly halfway between Vienna and Budapest. Great old town center, great old Abbey, Winery, Converted monastery hotel to say in.

Banska Stiavnica is certainly worth visit. But it would be a significant detour when traveling from Vienna to Budapest. I would go with James' suggestion.
