Anyone familiar with Donovaly, Slovakia?

Hi, we will be spending one week in Donovaly in May. I have a few questions, hope someone on this forum can help me:

  1. We will be staying at Hotel Galileo Compass Club, we plan to do some day hikes around the area. This is in Low Tatras area. Anyone knows if there's good hiking trails around? Is it easy to get to the trail heads? Do we need to rent a car to get around? And where do we rent a car? Most U.S. car rental company only provide rentals from big city, like in Bratislava, I can't find any in Donovaly.

  2. We plan to fly to Budapest, Hungary, then ride a bus from Budapest to Donovaly. Since we are not flying, a question comes to mind as where do we exchange some local currency? Are there banks in Donovaly where we can exchange foreign currency?

Thanks!

Thanks, scythian.

But we are not going back to Budapest. From Donovaly, we will go to Prague, spend 2 days there, then fly back to U.S. from Prague. Looks like Banska Bystrica is a bigger town, maybe there's car rental place there?

Donovaly is a mountain resort in the pass on the road between Ruzomberok and Banska Bystrica. There are a lot of hiking trails. Higher altitude trails may be still under snow in May. Inquire locally. Rent a car in Banska Bystrica. Exchange money there too. Slovakia uses Euro as its currency.
