Will I need a car on Raasay?

I will be spending 4 nights on Skye and wanted to visit Raasay while I was there to do some walking. I will be staying in Portree and will have a rental car, but wasn't sure if I should take my car over on the ferry or just leave it in Sconser at the landing. Raasay looks small but it's hard to tell how far the walks are from the ferry landing.

I visited Raasay in September 2019 as part of a Rabbies tour and the tour guide left the van on Skye and took us all over as foot passengers on the ferry to have a free day on Raasay. It wasn't part of the original itinerary, but it ended up being one of my favorite days of the tour. We were able to easily walk from the ferry terminal to Raasay house and from there to the distillery, some small shops and some pretty little walking trails. We didn't really "do" anything that day, but I loved the views back toward Skye from the hills and the peace and quiet was amazing after several busy days. I would say as long as you can walk at least a few miles comfortably, you should be fine without a car. I don't recall any of the distances being very far and all the walks we did were very enjoyable. You won't make it all the way around the island or see everything if you're on foot, but it's possible to have a nice day on Raasay without a car.

Allie, that's what I was hoping - it looks like it's a lovely and peaceful spot and nice for some easy walking. Thank you very much!

Raasay was one of my (and my wife's) favourite places in Scotland.
Take your rental across on the ferry.
You can visit the whole island that way.
The walk up Duncaan is just fabulous, you would need car or bike to get to the start.
A drive on Calums Road is worthwhile too. Google the history of this 3 km road.
The castle ruins are just near there too.
Lots of other interesting bits and pieces to explore too.

Hopefully you will get a dolphin escorted ferry ride as we did.

Definitely take your car over. Callum's road is beautiful and even more so when you know the story. Calum's Road
You would not be able to get there without a car.

You could walk up Dun Caan without bringing your car over, description of the hike here - Dun Caan Walk , but having a car will allow you to explore the whole island.

If you want to tour the distillery it may be best to reserve a spot on a tour.

Raasay is gorgeous - so glad you want to go there.
