Whiskey Trail & Outlander

I'm looking to book a trip to Scotland mid-may and am trying to create my itinerary. There will be two of traveling for about 10 days, somewhere between 8/18-8/30. We'd like to spend a few days in Edinburgh, but then I'm not sure how to plan the rest.

I'd like to include a couple days in the Speyside area on the whiskey trail, but I'm not sure what town to stay in while there or the best way to get to said town. The one distillery I'd love to visit is MaCallan and am open for suggestions for less commercial distilleries worth visiting.

My travel companion is a huge fan of Outlander and from there would love to see the areas in Scotland either shown in the show or things that helped inspire scenes in the show (I have not seen it yet so I am clueless as to where/what to look into).

I also need suggestions for traveling between said places. Is it easier to use public transportation? Should I plan on renting a car? Are there tour (private or otherwise) worth looking into?

I'm also not sure what kind of budget to say I have. Things don't need to be top-of-the-line luxurious. Mid-range would suffice.

I hope this is enough information. Any and all recommendations are appreciated. Thanks!

FYI-
The Fringe takes over Edinburgh for most of the month of August. It's great fun, the largest performing arts festival in the world. However, hotels will be expensive and in short supply. So- either plan to participate, or avoid.
Have a great trip!

Definitely go to the cooperage at Craigellachie. Its truly fascinating. We stayed in Grantown-on Spey, which I have little memory of except the best meal of the trip (lamb curry). I also remember getting a flat of short bread cookies at a seconds place in Elgin. We returned the rental car with crumbs everywhere!

There are a few Outlander filming locations in Edinburgh. A search will tell you where they are. Another site that was prominent in a couple seasons is Doune Castle about 8 miles from Stirling. I believe Clava Cairns was a partial inspiration for the stone circle used by Claire to time travel. That circle is fictitious, so don’t try to find it.

When we visited the latter two sites, we had a rental car.

Some tour companies, including the well-regarded Rabbie’s, offer Outlander-themed day trips from Edinburgh. I don’t watch the show but was tempted to take the tour just to visit the village of Culross, which is otherwise not easily accessible without a car.
