Husband and I were lucky enough to get tee times at The Old Course and Jubilee Course late October 2025. We'd like to stay in St. Andrews at least 2 nights, be close to the courses and be able to walk around town. Wanting to spend $200-300 a night - any recommendations? I can't decide between a guest house or look for a hotel - hesitating on a Guest House b/c we don't want to share a bathroom, and prefer bathroom attached to room and not have to go out in hall. Thanks for any suggestions!
Premier Inn is a chain that often comes up on this site. I use them all the time when I am travelling. I would have booked for my own recent stay in St Andrews, but no vacancies as the Dunhill golf tournament was in town! The rooms are all ensuite and if you go for a 'premier plus' room you get a slightly higher spec room, often with a walk in shower rather than over the bathtub, mini fridge, coffee machine (rather than just a kettle) etc.
It’s been years, but we stayed at the Ardgowan. The good news is that it looks like they’ve done a refresh since we were there. We were pleased with the room, the location, the staff and the food in the restaurant. Our room was en-suite. One of the fun parts was the restaurant was a gathering place for fellow golfers who were happy to discuss rounds, clubs, etc.. it remains one of my husband’s favorite golf experiences.
I just stayed with my golf group at Hazelbank Hotel in St. Andrews. It's a simple but comfortable place just a couple of blocks from the Old Course. They have a golf storage room so your clubs and rain gear don't have to come in your room with you. Good breakfast and perfect location for everything that St. Andrews has to offer.
We did play Jubliee but could not get on the Old Course. St. Andrews is lovely (even beyond the golf)!
I'll second the recommendation for the Hazelbank, though the rooms are quite cozy. Unless you're willing to pony up for Rusacks, it's about as close to the Old Course as you'll find. The Haar and the Dunvegan are also possibilities. And there are a bunch of small guest houses in the town that may offer en suite rooms.
I don't know how many other courses you might want to play in the area, but I strongly recommend Kingsbarns; it's gorgeous and a good test. And you might be early enough in planning to secure a tee time at North Berwick, possibly the best golf course in Scotland outside of Royal Dornoch. But it's way on the other side of Edinburgh.
Thanks all!
My wife and I stayed at 5 Pilmour Pl, St Andrews KY16 9HZ, UK last spring. It was one of the most expensive places we stayed on our first Europe trip last spring. I was planing on doing the overnight que which is why I wanted to be close to the course. But they got rid of the que right before we went there so I had to find another way to play. The room is right next door to the Dunvegan motel and Bar. In fact you go into the bar to get the code for the room access.
It was just around the corner from the old course. If your going to spend the money for the golf I think this room won't break the bank.
Have a great time. I got in through the 48 hour lottery with a couple other fellows. I found them by asking for players in this forum. It was a father and son from South Dakota. The wife got us hooked up so we all got in.
We just returned from our Scotland trip as we had won the lottery for this past October. We stayed at Six Murray Park in St Andrews for 5 nights and I highly recommend it. It is a B&B a few blocks from the first tee at the Old Course and right in the middle of town. No shared bathrooms and falls into your price range. Look up my review on Trip Advisor. I won’t stay anywhere else in St Andrews.
There are lots of other courses in the St Andrews area, of course. We also spent a few days in East Lothian/North Berwick area as well and stayed at the Nether Abbey Hotel.
Since you know your dates for the Old Course, now is a good time to arrange other bucket list course tee times if you have an interest. I was able to arrange tee times at North Berwick, Muirfield, Carnoustie, Crail. Played some fun “hickory stick” courses like Olde Musselburgh and Kingarrock as well.
