Where to stay between Isle of Skye and Edinburgh

Hello All,

My husband and I will be traveling to Scotland in March of 2022. After flying into Inverness, we will be staying in Knoydart for two nights and then spending another two nights in Isle of Skye. We’d like to head towards Edinburgh after that but would like to stay one night somewhere along the way. Any recommendations on a good place to stay in between? Thank you.

Maybe somewhere in the Oban-Fort William-Maillaig area?

Fort William is where we stayed for 2 nights, after Skye and on the way to Edinburgh.

We stayed one night in Pitlochry between Skye and Edinburgh. It was a good distance for driving, and we arrived with time to walk to and tour Edradour, which proved to be our favorite whiskey tour. It also was a charming little town.

Is it feasible to drive right through from Isle of Skye to Edinburgh? We had originally planned three nights in Knoydart but could decrease our stay by a night if needed.

I would reckon 6 hours drive at worse.

Logical route is to cut through to Dalwhinnie from Spean Bridge rather than heading back to Fort William and the A82

Hi Kate -

It’s definitely driveable in a day. Maybe Richard, like me, has driven to/from Skye from/to Yorkshire in a fairly long day. Edinburgh however, should be a much shorter, more comfortable drive. I travelled with friends heading for Newcastle Upon Tyne via Edinburgh from Fort William and their route was Glencoe-Crianlarich-Callendar-Stirling-Edinburgh-Newcastle. (I think the excellent pie shop at Callendar may have been an ulterior motive! If you decided to break your journey, Callendar is a good stop off point). That said, no reason why you couldn’t follow the same route, taking the ferry from Skye to Mallaig, driving past Glenfinnan to Fort William. You could of course drive the whole way, but it will extend your drive time, but that said, the scenery is wonderful.

The journey is about 250 miles, so a time budget of 5 to 6 hours is best depending on the route. It is certainly doable in a day, I'd definately budget a longer time rather than a shorter one.
