We will travel to Scotland in April 2025 and will be in the Inverness area for several days. We will do a day trip around Loch Ness one day and are looking for great places to see Highland cows — probably at a farm and/or tea room (I’ve found several). Any ideas for the best places to go to see these cute cows … particularly that are open on Mondays?
National Trust for Scotland which look after Culloden Battlefield are using Highland Cows to return the battlefield to the bog like condition it was like in 1746. You should be able to see cows there. Have a read about them here.
We've had trips where we haven't seen any, then the next trip they keep blocking traffic on rural roads. We don't "search" for them, but just leave it to chance, sort of like puffins. The Culloden idea is probably a good one.

Somewhere else, to see them in the wild (rather further on) is the Isle of Luing where you can see Luing Cattle- a cross breed of Highland Cattle.
Luing is an island a short drive south of Oban (or an easy bus ride for those with the free day in Oban on the RS tours) then the shortest ferry ride in Scotland (a council run, not CalMac) ferry.
One of the Slate Islands- known for their historic slate extraction industry.
Highland cows wander around the village of Duirinish which is a few miles south of Plockton. We have seen them several times, most recently in 2022. Although they look cute and cuddly, they have bad tempers, especially ones with calves. (Rather like the bison at Yellowstone N. P. ) This location is 60 - 70 miles west of Loch Ness and a slight detour if heading to Skye.
