I'll be spending 16 nights on tours that end in Edinburgh ( 3 nights there as part of tour). I''d like to stay 3-4 extra nights and am a female solo traveler. Any suggestions on where to chill? Glasgow, Ediburgh somewhere nearby? I won't have a car and will be flying out of Glasgow.
I think it depends on your interests and where you will have already been on your tour. Does the tour spend time in Glasgow?
I found as much to do in Glasgow as in Edinburgh, because I really liked the Charles Rennie Mackintosh architecture. In addition to tracking down most of his buildings in Glasgow, I took a day trip to Helensburgh to see the Hill House. Glasgow has a lot of good museums, including the recently reopened Burrell Collection.
So I looked at the tour and you are going to see some of the great parts of Scotland. My first thought had been to send you to my favorite small town, Dunkeld which you can reach via the RR. From there you can take the RR north and visit Blair Castle. Or you can go go on to Pitlochry. But Rick must be reading all my posts about Dunkeld as he's already taking you there. So, another idea is to go on all the way to Pitlochry. There are lots of accommodation options there. Look and see what is playing at the Festival Theatre. It's a lovely small theater. You book a taxi in advance to get you there and back from the show. You can also walk along the Tay some more. The Explorer's Garden is great. Also there is distillery which has a nice tour. And you can take the RR up to Blair castle from Pitlochry easily. Or you could go up to Kingussie and visit the Highland Folk Museum.
Alternatively you could just stay in Edinburgh. There are lots of day tours that you could do. You could take Borders RR or just look and see what Rabbies has on offer. They have tours to the Borders--Roslyn Chapel--Hadrians Wall, Alnick Castle and a gin tour! You could also look for a day tour that would take you to the Abbeys--Jedburgh, Melrose, Kelso, and Dryburgh. Also in the Borders you have Abbotsford and Traquair House.

Thank you for the ideas! I might be all toured out as I’ll be on 2 Discover Scotland tours of the inner Hebrides before the Rick Steves tour. I’ll look into Pitlochry and/or maybe take a train to London for a few days and just walk around.
Another option is to hop a short flight to the Orkney or Shetland Islands. Both are laid back areas with smaller hotels.
Another option, if you are flying out of Glasgow, is to take the train south to the Lake District. Its just over 2 hours to Penrith where you can catch a bus to Keswick one of larger towns in the area. The bus is around 40 minutes.
Yep if you are toured out, then look for a castle where they have music, good food and good whisky.
