Where to go, after 3 days in Luss

My son Neal (age 21) and I are attending Clan Colquhoun International Society's festive gathering in Luss, staying at the Loch Lomond Arms (July 3-6). One of the highlights is a black-tie dinner at Rossdhu House, so we are super excited!

We fly into Glasgow and plan to take an Uber to Luss (I've never driven on the left side, and need practice first!).
Any ideas on where we should go after the weekend ends? We have four days. Oban? Ideally, we'd like to rent a car, but it will be a problem since we are in Luss.

Sounds like a nice event.

Have you contacted the hotel or the clan society for suggestions regarding transportation? Any chance you could arrive in Glasgow a day early, spend the night and pick up a rental car the next morning,?

Otherwise , I think you will probably have to head back to the Glasgow area to pick up a car rental.

What date is your return flight?

Without a car there is bus service several times a day between Luss and Oban that will take you through some lovely scenery.

With 3 nights in Oban you could take an all day tour to the islands of Mull and Iona with Westcoast Tours. A walking tour on your own or with a guide, the Oban distillery for a tour & tasting and a great seafood dinner another day.

You would want to be back in Glasgow the night before your flight home. You could take a train back to Glasgow, again with nice scenery. There a many good museums and galleries to explore the city. Our just wander the city with interesting architecture and the River Clyde.

Thanks, great ideas.
Maybe I should just rent a car at the airport in Glasgow? Is it difficult to drive, leaving Glasgow to Luss? It will be too much trouble to return to Glasgow and pick up a car rental ....

I'll share a Google Maps link below. It's the top match for your journey, and as someone who has driven around that area a lot, looks perfectly reasonable.

As drives go, it's not difficult. Do a little prep on Youtube and other places as far as driving technique for the UK goes, and have a look at the route on Google Streetview to see the roads. You'll be fine. At least it gets starting to drive over with right off the bat. Let your son do the driving, provided he's halfway willing, if you're not up for it.

My caution with driving is don't drive to Luss after getting off an overnight flight. With your unfamiliarity with the roads plus driving on the left after virtually no sleep on the plane is a bad mix.

Also, there may be minimum drivers age depending on the rental company. Be sure to check if you want your son to drive.

Whatever you decide, have a great time!

Adding to the drive vs public transport.

With bus and train you both can easily take in the sweeping views!

Hiring a car at the airport is a good idea and Luss is just over a 30 min drive away.It is however on busy motorway/dual carriageway until you arrive at Loch Lomond where it becomes single carriageway(not single track!)

And depending what time you arrive in Glasgow there are a number of direct daily buses from Glasgow Airport to Luss.
And 5 daily buses direct from Luss to Oban.

Apart from Iona, Staffa etc, (with West Coast Tours) also Kerrera, Kilmartin, Lismore etc from Oban I have just been reading this morning (courtesy of CalMac) about Authentic Adventures Mull.
They are a fairly new company who do bespoke private car tours of Mull.

Afterwards there is the train back from Oban to Glasgow.

Your advice is much appreciated!

I agree, renting a car after an overnight flight from Charlotte to London then Glasgow is a bad idea. We may take an Uber to Luss (just this one time, we will splurge). After four days in Luss, I made a reservation at Pearl Oban Hotel, since we can arrive directly by bus and will be centrally located. Will possibly take a day trip to one of the Islands.

All this is subject to change, if my Clan Colquhoun friends have better ideas -- and transportation. Thank you!
