What to Book Ahead?

My family of four (kids are ages 9 and 7) are heading to Scotland at the end of August. Five nights in the Highlands (most of which are on Skye), five nights in Edinburgh. All accommodations and the rental car are booked, and I also booked our tickets to Edinburgh Castle as I understand those can sell out well in advance. I am planning to make a few meal reservations ahead of time too.

Are there other activities folks would suggest booking ahead of time? We plan on doing a day trip from Edinburgh to St. Andrews, and are also considering a day trip to Glasgow.

What dates are you in Edinburgh? Sounds like you might be there after the Fringe and the Tattoo and all the other festivals are over, which makes things easier.

If Mary King’s Close interests you, I believe that needs pre-booking.

Both St Andrews and Glasgow are worthwhile - but very different - day trips. Another good one is Stirling, for the castle. These are all simple decide-on-the-day destinations by train.

Thanks for the prompt response! We arrive a day or two after the Fringe ends (we did that on purpose). I will look into Mary King's Close.

In Edinburgh, if you are interested in the popular and interesting Royal Mile walking tour with Mercat Tours book in advance.

If you do a day trip to St. Andrews, your family might enjoy the Himalayas Putting Course. It is probably not necessary to book ahead and you can play just a few holes if your time is limited.

Also, if restaurant dining on Skye, definitely book ahead.
