In Oban and tour to Iona cancelled tomorrow. Any suggestions what we can do instead? Have done the Glencoe area. Thank you
What was the reason for the cancellation? Weather? Not enough people signed up? If it wasn't due to weather you could do a day trip to Mull and Iona on your own. Ferry from Oban to Craignure, then bus to Fionnphort and ferry from there to Iona. Or you could just take the ferry to Mull and then bus to any number of places on the island. Guess it depends on how much getting to Iona means to you.
You could take the ferry to Mull and then take a taxi to Duart Castle. It's a great castle.
Alternatively, you could stay on the mainland and drive down to Kilmartin if you have a car. Kilmartin Glen is an interesting place. Be sure to check out Dunnad. Put your foot in the footprint and declare yourself the king/queen of Scotland. It is lovely.
Hi, hbo6,
If the CalMac ferries are sailing to Craignure, then you should definitely follow Nancy's suggestion. The earlier you get to Craignure and catch the bus for Fionnphort, the more time you'll have on Iona. If you're driving, you should have no problem.
If you've prepaid for the tour, make sure to get your money refunded. I had to remind a tour operator after I had not been refunded after about three weeks. They're honest, but sometimes forgetful!
Best wishes,
Mike (Auchterless)
You could visit one of my favourite parts of Scotland - the Ardnamurchan peninsular. Drive up and beyond Ballachullish and take the Corran ferry over. Drive the north side of Loch Sunart (look out for otters) and visit the lighthouse on the west coast. It’s a stunning loop, ending at Fort William. There are some great tea shops on the peninsula and the people are the friendliest in Scotland.
To add to Jennifer's recommendation of Ardnamurchan: https://ardnamurchan.com/ardnamurchan-blog/single-track-roads/
(Even though by now presumably you've already decided how to fill up the vacant day left by the cancellation.)
