We are looking for one or two week long stays in Scotland, on a beach, lake or river. (Within walking distance)
What websites have you used to find holiday rental houses or cottages? Have looked at Homeaway, booking, and holiday rentals.co.uk. Have found a couple possibilities, but since we are in Scotland July 19-Aug 8, we are in peak season with high prices and mandatory Sat-Sat bookings.
Any ideas?
I believe the websites of the local tourist offices often have listings of accommodations, some of which might not be bookable on the platforms you mention because of the fees. If there are some specific places you're especially interested in, you might try that approach. Perhaps there's a tourist organization for the entire island of Skye, etc.?
I know from my experience seeking a simple, twin-bedded room for last July that it's difficult to find affordable lodgings in island and Highland towns served by public transportation. The demand at that time of year is overwhelming. I assume you'll have a car, so that gives you more flexibility.
At that time of year, all cottage bookings will be for 7 nights starting either Friday or Saturday and they will be expensive. The best places will have been booked by now, as many will be regular repeat bookings.
You have the major sites, but I have also used Scottish-country-cottages.co.uk. Avoid Sykes Cottages as their properties are more basic and dated.

I have stayed in several of their properties and have always been very satisfied. Prices are reasonable for what you get.
But bear in mind this is peak season and rentals will certainly be for a minimum of a week.

Jennifer, thanks for the link to Country Cottages. Found a property for the week that fits perfectly into our 4 weeks in Great Britain. From here we are doing a 5 night- 4 day Hadrians wall self guided hike.
