I know, it's amateur to ask a question about weather as I know it is so unpredictable any place, but typically, what is the weather like in early to mid September. We will be in Edinburgh, Inverness, Stirling and Isle of Sky over a 13 day period. I will not actually mind a couple of days of "Scottish weather" so I can have that experience. We are coming from the Southern US where it can easily still be mid 90's that time of year.
Basically 61 degree highs/ 48 degree lows with 11 days when there’s some rain. Slight variations between your destinations
In brief: cool and damp.
I live in Skye. I like early September as there are fewer midges around and my experience is that for Skye, September is one of our more settled months. However, the old adage that you can expect to see 4 seasons in one day at any time of the year in Scotland still holds true (apart from snow in September). For example yesterday was a warm (low 70s) day, with sunshine and no wind. Today I've woken to thick fog and drizzle. One of the joys of living here is that the weather can change very quickly as it's often windy and I see clouds and storms moving quickly up the sea loch outside my house.
So expect temperatures in the 50s to mid 60s, and bring layers including waterproofs.
I don't like to use averages for this purpose; they hide extremes, and extremes are what can make you uncomfortable. I prefer the actual, historical, day-by-day temperature graphs available on websites like timeanddate.com. I us7ally look at the most recent five years' data.

Western Scotland tends to be wetter than eastern Scotland, but a bit warmer.
I was in Edinburgh and Glasgow 2 years ago in the second half of September. I think it was fairly typical weather and temperatures - mostly cloudy with brief sun, rain one evening. Temperatures in low to mid teens Celsius. You will need a lightweight jacket that is water repellent or waterproof and bring at least one wool sweater that fits under that jacket. When I say light weight I mean suitable for fall weather in the northern US. I also wore a knitted cotton/wool/silk hat most days outside and very glad to have it.
By the way few people in rural Scotland (e.g. Skye) use an umbrella when it rains. It's generally too windy. So a decent hat is a good idea. Be aware that if your hat has a wide brim you'll also need a means of stopping it blowing off your head!
What do you all think about a puffer vest vs. puffer coat for this time of year? With a good raincoat packed as well? I have the 32degree brand from Costco in both. FYI, I was in there yesterday and the vests are in stock for $13.99 if anyone is in need. Not sure which would be best for this time of year.
If the puffer vest is intended as outer wear, I don't think you would be warm enough.
I had a lightweight quilted polyester jacket that had enough ease to wear a close fitting knitted wool vest over a T shift or long sleeve wool sweater underneath; my water repellent jacket had enough for those underlayer also. Layers are your friend.
To Skyegirl's comment, you don't see many people in the cities with umbrellas any more either. Again, two windy, in and out of buildings all the time, and you lose them!
Weather wise Scotland in September is, well September. As the month between August and October it will have aspects of both, mid teens to mid twenties. Bright sunny days, torrential showers.
Susan, thanks for your reply. I realize I don’t want to hijack this thread w my question and response to your reply so I will start a new one here shortly. Appreciate it!
