Walking tours in Edinbourgh

I'll be in Edinburgh this November. I only have 4 days there..and I'd like to spend an afternoon walking with a knowledgeable local guide . Any recommendations?

So it is pretty easy to walk around Edinburgh on your own. That said, I've always wanted to go on Rebus walking tour as I am a huge fan of Ian Rankin. I've also taken at least one Mercat tour and enjoyed it. You could also check out this book.

Hi, jpillipow,

Believe it or not, I was just listening to Bill Hill when I saw your post. I'm actually listening to a cassette (!) I made of Bill's show on Radio Forth in 1983. Bill has been a folksinger, songwriter, radio host, and has been an Edinburgh tour guide for the last I don't know how many years. He is a very funny man, and knows a hell of a lot about Edinburgh.

You can check out Bill's reviews on TripAdvisor if you don't believe me. He's the man to give you a great tour, walking or by public transportation.

You can contact Bill at 011 44 131 2599275 (landline) or 011 44 7983 023753 (mobile). Or e-mail at [email protected].

You won't be disappointed!

Sandeman's is tour company that offers free and paid walking tours. I know at first it sounds like one of those boring giant tourist conglomerates but I assure you it is not. If you go, ask for Alasdair. He was born, raised, and never left Edinburgh. I have been on four of his tours and they have never disappointed me.

I can't remember which company did the tour, but be sure to take an evening ghost tour. We had a great time! There are a number of companies that offer them.

DH and i are doing the RS tour early May and arriving in Edinburgh a day early to get acclimated to the time change. A friend of his strongly recommended the Cadies and Witchery Tours and we are going to try to make that one night---I'll let you know what we think about it when we return. The Cadies and Witchery tour also got great reviews on Trip Advisor.
