Walking (Hiking) in Scotland--favorite places

Many of my trips to Scotland have involved walking trips. I've usually been in the north, but I've also walked on Harris, Skye and in Perthshire. But this recent article on the new John Muir Way which is based in the Central Belt got me wondering about where others have walked and hiked in Scotland. What are your favorite places? Where do you want to walk next?

My favorites include the Ullapool Hills and the walks near Dunkeld. I think I need to add The John Muir Way to my next trip.

The Borders railway has just opened up a few moths ago and I have done one short walk based on stops on that line, over the next while I am going to explore a few walks that can be done using he railway line and its stations as start and finish points of walks.

Thanks for the heads up. Our only Scotland walking holiday was the West Highland.

The Muir walk looks like an interesting Scottish Coast to Coast and shorter than the Wainwright England Coast to Coast. Interesting video on the Walk Highlands site:

Time constrained travelers could bike the route.

I thought it was good to hear about walks that are easy to get to from Edinburgh. I keep forgetting about the new railway! Thanks for the reminder.

We scheduled a week for walking in Scotland in May of 2014. This was a month or so after the John Muir Way opened and I was attracted to that. I thought I might be among the first to walk both that and the John Muir Trail in the Sierras (did that in 1970, the whole way, Yosemite to the top of Mt. Whitney). But after looking at the route for the Scotlnd walk, t seemed more suitable for a bike ride than a walk we would want to do---quite urban.

So instead we went here and there and did day walks from our hotel. Our favorite was probably the circumambulation of the Isle of Kerrera , a 3-minute ferry ride from Oban. It probably helped that it was a beautiful day.

Pam I am going to be checking out some walks on the railways over the winter months for my walking group and will let you know what I find. If you are in Edinburgh you could always join the group for one of our walks as visitors are always welcome. Most of our walks are based around public transport and we always end up at a pub for a drink and a meal if folk want.
