Visit St. Andrews Scotlad

Hello All

I just returned from a terrific 10-day golf trip to Scotland that had been canceled in 2020 and again in 2021 because of COVID. It was a self-planned trip with a golfing friend, but with much help from folks on this site as well and people in Scotland. We stayed six nights in St. Andrews where we played three rounds including the Old Course, and two nights in Carnoustie where we played that iconic course as well. On one of our off days, we took the train to Edinburgh where we spend a full day exploring the city using the Hop On, Hop Off buses. I tell you all this to throw out my question for you.

I am retired and because of the experience I just had, I am thinking about planning a month-long solo trip to St. Andrews, both for golf and exploring other parts of Scotland. Money to do this is not an issue and my wife says if I want to go, I should do it while I am still in good health. Due to issues with her mother, she is unable to join me. I will be 77 next month and have made three two-week solo trips, two to Hawaii (2015 & 2017) and the other in Italy (2018). I am interested in any of your thoughts, comments or suggestions on how I might make this happen. Lodging, transportation, activities, not to miss things in Scotland, etc., and if anyone has done this sort of thing anywhere in the UK or Europe, please share your experiences. Using all of Rick's tools and the travel forum I have independently planned four other trips to Europe and four to Hawaii taking my wife and her elderly mother. I'd appreciate anything you'd care to share. Thank you.

Jim

Sounds like you had a great time. And I love your wife’s attitude.

I haven’t been to Scotland yet, but I wanted to send you some encouragement. I’m traveling to Edinburgh next May and it will be a solo trip. If I can travel solo, anyone can. 😊

I’m sure you already have the RS guidebook. I also like the Rough Guide Scotland, although the font is tiny.

Here’s a good website if you enjoy walking:

I have taken extended trips in Scotland and should be back next month for five weeks.

My first suggestion is to get the RS Scotland guidebook, go through it, and decide what you want to see and do.

How you travel is important. A car can get you almost anyplace but the train and bus systems are pretty good. Additionally, you might look into one or more day tours in small groups such as with Rabbies.

I'll be following to see what kind of suggestions you get. I'm planning to go to Edinburgh and day trips next year.
