This will be our third Scotland vacation. We have mapped out a very complete itinerary starting in Edinburgh up to the highlands and then Skye. We end that loop in Oban and then head back to Edinburgh for our flight home. We've seen several really helpful posts here regarding stops along the route back to Edinburgh. However, they all assume a one day drive back. We actually have one night left for that last leg so it can be a two day drive for us. We are having a very difficult time finding recommendations for an overnight stop between Oban and Edinburgh. Any recommendations ould be greatly appreciated.
If you haven't been to Stirling stop there and see the Palace and Holy Rude Church and the Wallace Monument. It is in a convenient location to stay and to see Falkirk and the Selkies and Lithlingow Palace on your way back to Edinburgh.
Well, you could stop and see Inveraray Castle, which is really gorgeous and is about an hour east of Oban. After that, head for Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park where you could spend the night. After your night there, you could head north east to get to Stirling and Stirling castle and stop there on your way back to Edinburgh.
I loved Stirling Castle and the town of Stirling and thought it was well worth a visit. In fact, you could do as Kathleen suggested and spend the night there. You could still follow the itinerary above but instead of staying near Loch Lomond, jsut stop there for some hiking and scenic views, then get to Stirling in the late afternoon for the night. I don't know when your flight leaves from Edinburgh, so not sure when you have to be back.
