I didn't find Oban interesting except as a place to go somewhere else. On the other hand, I loved Glasgow. As far as getting to Edinburgh for your fight, I'd be getting there the night before. Who knows what might happen that morning; a traffic accident closing the highway, flat tire, delays returning your car...

There’s little to do in Oban other than catch a ferry.

An almost hour drive on the morning of an early departure is way outside my comfort zone. We returned our rental car to the airport the day before our flight home and stayed in Edinburgh. Edinburgh airport is fairly small and 2-2.5 hours before departure was sufficient. Because one in our party had mobility issues, we took a taxi to the airport. With tip it cost £30 and took about 30 minutes. It you stayed at a hotel near the tram, you could take the tram to the airport. It takes about 40 minutes..

Hi, Cindy,

To add what Allan and Jaime have already advised, you definitely do not want to stay in Glasgow the night before a 10:35 a.m. departure from EDI. The M8 motorway, which you'd need to take out of Glasgow to get to EDI, is notorious for accidents, roadworks, and other slowdowns. The A8, which runs parallel to the M8, would take forever. There are several hotels near EDI, and you could spend as much time as you like in Glasgow on the 10th before heading off to your airport lodging.

As far as Oban goes, a lot depends on your interests. If you are walkers/hikers, a day trip to Kerrera would be ideal for the 8th., and you would be back to Gallanach in plenty of time to spend Saturday night in Glasgow. (Cue Will Fyffe!) There is definitely a lot more to see and do in Glasgow (museums, parks, shopping, Glasgow Cathedral, the Necropolis, People's Palace, etc.), but again, Oban vs. Glasgow will depend on your interests.

Several posters here have recommended Kilmartin Glen, which is a short drive from Oban. If you are interested in antiquities and early Scottish history, that could be another way to spend a day.

You have a very short distance to drive from Stirling to Kenmore, and since the games don't start until early evening, you could visit Doune Castle, Dunkeld, and Pitlochry on the way. Dunkeld Cathedral is worth a visit.

En route from Kenmore (I hope that you have made accommodation arrangements for the night of 5 July) to Oban, you could detour via Glencoe to see what all the fuss is about. It's not that far out of the way.

Have a wonderful holiday in Scotland! Your itinerary looks very straightforward and easily doable.

Best wishes!

I am thinking of rearranging the trip and start with Glasgow so we can go to the highland games at Luss on July 1. Kenmore accommodations are few....Is Luss a day trip from Glasgow or would we want to stay by Luss and continue to Oban?

The Luss highland games appear to be more involved than the Kenmore games. thoughts?

Hi again, Cindy,

Luss Highland Games are a much bigger deal than Kenmore. Luss is about an hour's drive from Glasgow, so you can keep the same accommodation in Glasgow while you attend the Games. There is not much in the way of accommodation between Dumbarton and Luss, and definitely not much north of Luss, so staying on in Glasgow would be your best bet. (Cue Will Fyffe once again!)

You could still drive on to Oban after the Luss Games, but if you want to spend a couple of days in Glasgow, you'd be better served heading back to Glasgow after the Games.

Hope that helps.
